Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An amorous and energetic aerobics instructor named Andros comes to an untimely end in the third outing for St. Louis attorney Rachel Gold (after Grave Designs and Death Benefits ). It turns out that Andros has been romancing a number of his students (porno pictures provide evidence), among them Rachel's sister, Ann, who becomes one of the suspects. Together with her mother (with whom Rachel now lives) and her raunchy sidekick Benny Goldberg, Rachel delves into a complex network of Andros's business and personal connections, persevering despite death threats, obstructive witnesses and noncooperative attorneys. Kahn, a lawyer himself, has a keen eye for details, both legalistic (Rachel is merciless to those less intelligent) and familial. Although the pieces fit together a bit too neatly toward the end, Rachel remains one of the more engaging sleuths on the mystery scene.

From School Library Journal

Series protagonist Rachel Gold (Death Benefits, Dutton, 1992) is a good divorce lawyer. Here, she agrees to help Eileen Landau, a friend of her sister, who wants to "drop" her pandering husband. Rachel's investigations uncover more than she bargained for, however, when police accuse her sister of murdering Eileen's lover, a hunky aerobic stud muffin-also known as a gambler. Now that her sister is involved, Rachel switches into high gear, and the widely publicized sex scandal fuels high-speed action and consummate thrills. Good narrative and a great read. More About the Author

Michael Kahn is a trial lawyer by day and an author at night. He wrote his first novel, GRAVE DESIGNS, on a challenge from his wife Margi, who got tired of listening to the same answer whenever she asked him about a book he was reading. "Not bad," he would say, "but I could write a better book than that." "Then write one," she finally said, "or please shut up." So he shut up, and then he wrote one.

Kahn is the award-winning author of: seven Rachel Gold novels; an eighth novel, THE MOURNING SEXTON, under the pen name Michael Baron; and several short stories.

In addition to his day job as a lawyer, he is an adjunct professor of law at Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches a class on censorship and free expression. Married to his high school sweetheart, he is the father of five and the grandfather of, so far, three.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plots, Plots and more Plots, April 1, 2000
This review is from: Firm Ambitions (Rachel Gold Mystery Series) (Paperback)
Rachel Gold is cool. Tho a lawyer, she spends most of her time 'detecting' along with her mother and a lifelong friend, Benny, a rotund fancier of foods and females. They are all working on freeing her sister Ann from a murder rap. Good book, a little heavy on the sexual inuendo and 'out' uendo too. Lots of plots, counter plots, dead ends and runarounds. It doesn't fully resolve until almost the final page.

5.0 out of 5 stars rachel rocks!, May 25, 2001
This review is from: Firm Ambitions (Rachel Gold Mystery Series) (Paperback)
Rachel Gold is Everywoman of today! She is smart, witty, shrewd, career-minded, independent and clever. Michael A. Kahn does an excellent job of embodying a successful female lawyer, and can keep a reader captivated. I was never much into mysteries, but I picked up this book on a whim and when I got home, I couldn't put it down! So many twists and turns, plenty of drama and quite a few laughs. Highly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars a very personal trainer, January 5, 2001
a swarthy fitness guru who sexercises with rich suburbanites is poisoned. a weak link in an otherwise praiseworthy rachel gold series. a straightforward who-done-it lacking the usual consideration of weightier legal issues.
