Great workout...,
By Teedums (Minnesota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Firm - Complete Body Sculpting (DVD)
This workout is the first to be led by Christa Riley, I felt she did a decent job. It is part of the Firm's third Body Sculpting system which introduces the "Firm Box" which a 3 in 1 box that you can use as a 6 inch box for step aerobics, a 14 inch box for leg presses, or in an incline position for aerobics, lunges, chest and ab work.
The workout is 45 minutes long and packs a lot in a short time, you will alternate strength and cardio segments. There are 3 cardio segments, the first one using the box in the 6 inch position, where you will see basic steps, alternating knees, knee repeaters, A-steps, hesitation repeaters, etc. The second cardio segment is more hi-lo impact routine done on the floor but the box is in front of you but not used much. The third cardio segment uses the box in the incline position for aerobics, which can be a little awkward until one gets used to it, or if it's uncomfortable you can do it with the box in the 6 inch position and still get a good workout. The first strength segment includes squats, then double arm lat rows seated on the box, followed by leg press on one leg, then one arm lat rows on one side, with a few travelling squats following then one arm lat rows on the opposite side, then you finish out with leg presses on the other leg. The second strength segments is more leg work, lots of dips combined with shoulder work. The dips are performed off the step working one leg first with count variation, then moving right into the other leg repeating the pattern. Then you go into overhead presses, lifting both arms then alternating arms then both arms again. Then you do another set of lunges alternating with squats, again off the step. After that you will move into short lever side delt raises. Then it's onto a final set of dips with kicks alternating with squats. The third strength segment consists of more leg presses alternating with dips three times each, you will work one leg with the leg press then the other leg for the dips. Then you will rest the legs and do some pushups, followed by leg press and dips for the other side, then some tricep dips using the box. The final strength segment you will do lunges using the incline box, I like doing lunges this way myself, I find it's a little easier on my knees. Then you will move into biceps curls, then lunges on the other side, followed by hammer curls. Then you will do some closed squats, squats with legs together with more lunges alternating legs. Then you will do some calf raises, followed by chest work and abs using the incline box. If you do not have the Firm box, you can use a regular step for the aerobics and a stool for the leg presses. And the chest and ab work could easiely be done lying on the floor which may be the preferred way for some. You will also need some dumbells, in the video they use 2 sets, 3 and 8 lbs. Christa has 4 fellow Firm Master Instructors working out with her, with Libby showing the beginner modifications. Overall a rather complete workout in just 45 minutes, the music is good, high energy. I like this workout more each time I do it. Another good one from the Firm.

Poor Sound Quality Lowered My Review,
By
This review is from: The Firm - Complete Body Sculpting (DVD)
I used this DVD for the first time today to see if I wanted to put it in my regular rotation. I used the Transfirmer in lieu of the incline box and it worked fine.
The workout itself was fairly good and enjoyable, but the sound mixing was done so badly that you could hardly hear the instructor, Christa Riley, at least half the time. I typically barely notice the music on The Firm videos, but the sound level of the music and the music itself overwhelmed the workout at one point. I thought the instructor was pleasant but bland - fortunately, the routine is straightforward as she tended to give late cues. There was also a lack of instruction or tips on form or the muscle being worked. She wasn't bad, but just not equal to some of the other Firm instructors. I believe it was her first time instructing, but when I use a Firm video, guess I have certain expectations, which may not be fair. The routine was fairly easy to follow, even for a first time. Some of the footwork in The Firm videos using the step are complicated to the point of ridiculousness. I thought they did a good job of mixing the lower and upper body work so none of it got grueling. The leg presses were mixed in such a way with lunges that it was tough without getting to the point of joint paint, as I find the case in Maximum Body Shaping on the third set of leg presses. Overall, it was an enjoyable routine that was fairly straightforward and easy to follow as a result. It wasn't either the easiest or the hardest Firm I've encountered, but it worked all parts of the body. I'd have given this 4 stars if not for the poor sound quality and irritating music. This may be a good routine for a beginner or someone new to The Firm.

This is a total workout gem!,
This review is from: The Firm - Complete Body Sculpting (DVD)
This was one of the first workouts I tried in the new Firm Body Sculpting System 3. I purchased it from Collage Video with the original box. I must say this workout is so complete for being only 45 minutes.
The sets on this workout are alternated- weights and cardio. There are some traditional Firm moves here, like leg press and such. But they are all paced a bit differently and sometimes Christ uses compound moves to work the upper and lower body together that truly boost the heart rate. The incline bench, even when flat at six inches, certainly takes the cardio up a notch. The cardio on the incline is not only a cardio challenge, but a balancing challenge as well. The rear end is really worked. The bridgework done on the incline is tough and effective for the glutes. The ab work in the video is also performed on the incline, which will surprise even the most seasoned exerciser with its instensity. If you had trouble getting the deifinition you wanted in your abs, this will certainly do the trick...paws down. A true workout gem from the Firm! Did I mention it was fun? Kitka
