Editorial Reviews

Strength training, cardio intervals, and isometric toning comprise The Firm: Better Body and Buns. Three instructors team-teach this 45-minute total-body workout, and they don't miss a beat (or a body part). Muscles in the lower body are trained through a rigorous regimen of lunges, dips, and squats (quad killers coined "hovers" are introduced and are sure to make the legs burn). The upper body receives similar treatment with attention to the tricep, bicep, pectoral, deltoid, and back muscles. Participants will need a variety of weight sizes to get started (3 to 8 pounds), a step (14 inches), a dowel (or a broom handle), and ankle weights (for the die-hards). The variety of equipment, exercises, and tempo create a lively and quick-moving workout that will challenge students' strength and endurance. Abdominal crunches and inverse curls are used to train the torso, and stretching rounds out this total bodywork. Aerobic segments are more similar to cardio bursts (they only total four minutes within the whole video), and they don't provide steady-state cardiovascular exercise. This program would complement an aerobic regimen beautifully, but participants shouldn't rely on this format for an intense aerobic challenge. Better Body and Buns is sure to fatigue the muscles while holding the attention of its participants. --Olivia Voigts

4.0 out of 5 stars This is wonderful for you buns!, October 26, 1999

I don't care what anyone else says - this is a wonderful leg and butt shaper. It's not an aerobic tape, so you would want to add another tape before or after doing this one if your legs can take it. It uses a tall box step- 14"- which really gets your heartrate up, and it has a great ab section. The three instructors are wonderful, and very motivating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneficial, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Firm Total Body: Better Body & Buns [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am really enjoying this video. I rotate it with "Fat Blaster" and "Maximum Body Sculpting" which is what the company recommends. This tape used to be called "Better Buns" so be careful not to order a tape you already have. This tape has less aerobics that the others so it helps round out my routines. The cueing is good. It requires a dowel and tall box (tall step). The company would love for you to order these products from them but they are way over priced. Instead use a broom handle or 1" PVC pipe cut to a 4' length. Any steady stool the height you need will work. I use a shower stool that I had already.

3.0 out of 5 stars Total Body? Not really, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Firm Total Body: Better Body & Buns [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I wasn't really impressed with this tape, and I generally love the Firm's tapes. This tape mainly focuses on the lower body (hence the "buns" title), but it isn't really difficult like The Tough Tape or Standing Legs. The focus of the tape is mostly on body building and not on cardio, in fact, there wasn't much cardio other than the warmup and some jumps (which are high impact). The tape itself is 45 minutes and would best be classified as intermediate. The equipment you will need is a "tall box" (12-14 inch) and a dowel (or broom), plus weights. If you are looking for an intermediate lower body tape, this one probably isn't bad, but try Tough Tape or Standing Legs if you are looking for maximum lower body work.
