About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification--in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books--My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends--each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

More About the Author

Roger Priddy is the creator of over two hundred best selling books for young children including Wipe Clean ABC, First 100 Words, and Fuzzy Bee.

When he was at school he couldn't decide between being a patisserie chef or going to art college. On the advice of his father he chose art college and trained as an illustrator before becoming a designer at Usborne Publishing.

Roger's love for children's early learning has led him to create some of the most successful children's non-fiction books, first at Dorling Kindersley (My First Word Book, Incredible Cross Sections and My First Cook Book) before he set up Priddy Books with St. Martins Press in New York where several of his books have sold over a million copies each including My Big Animal Book and Happy Baby Words.

In total he has sold over 65 million books worldwide and his books have been translated into over 30 languages.

He says "It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially the babies when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!"

Roger lives with his wife Zena in London and Cork, Ireland (when it's not raining, which isn't very often!) They have four children Sam, Rose, Alannah and Gabriel (and a dog called Wallace) who have given him most of his best ideas for his books. He still loves baking bread and cakes!

While I agree with a lot of what was already said, I am not nearly as angry about it. It's a toddler book- I think we can all stay calm.

First, this book is great for my one year old because it has a soft cover that withstands his teething, thick board pages that are easy for him to turn without tearing, and is extremely colorful and inviting for him to look at. With the large pictures, he points to those he's interested in and even recognizes the ones like DOG!! However, please keep in mind that it is a small board book (diaper bag small), and not huge like the 100 first words book by the same publisher.

But, like others have said, there are not 100 animals in this book. Many are repeated. Also, there are some very random and out there animals that most toddlers and children are not going to need to familiarize themselves with while learning the basics of speech.

But, if you're looking for a colorful, inviting book to keep your young toddler interested and learning new words, this book is great! Perfect price for a diaper bag book!

We just got this book as gift from a bigger collection of books. The colors are vibrant and using real photographs to show animals are great.
However, I do believe the author's choice of animals and photos are questionable and confusing.

For example:

One page 1 Labeled PETS, there is no clarity between cat and kitten. Especially since you only the cat's head but you see the whole kitten.

Also on page 1 Labeled PETS, why are they Dog and Puppy, Cat and Kitten but the baby rabbit looks not labeled as a kittens.
The author should have just left well enough alone and didn't add baby PETS instead replace with Gerbil, hamster or bird.

Page 2, 3 and 4 -same thing goes for the farmer animal section.

Throughout the book I would have preferred all the animals to be cut-out of their background so that they look clearer and to have more full body shots instead of just a head for the child to have a better idea what the animal looks like. There're also improper labeling of animals.

At the end of reading this book to my daughter I feel like the author is just trying to cram the photos of animals he could find just to fulfill the title to this book: "FIRST 100 ANIMALS," with animal such as: EMU, KOOKABURRA, WALLABY (photoed next to the kangaroo head), LEOPARD, CHEETAH and af female LION all next to each other looking all the same, WATER DRAGON, WASP and COCKROACH!!?

I can't believe they actually can get away with calling it "100 animals" because there are not a hundred there: several appear twice and are "kitten" and "cat" different animals? They did mislabel the puffin also, calling it pelican. While this book is colorful and seems well-made, it is very misleading in its description. The worst past though is the inconsistencies in identifying animals - some are generic species and some are so specific as to make it confusing for a child (on the same page displaying a monkey, gorilla and orangutan). I wold not buy any in the series, considering how this one turned out. There are plenty of much better books out there, not to mention ones without horrible mislabels. Shame on you, Priddy Books!

Upon opening this colorful and inviting book I noticed the profile of a friendly looking puffin in the top right corner of the cover. As I continued to flip through the book I saw many animals that in my opinion, no "baby to toddler" should have to know (such as terrapin, wombats, and the ever elusive water dragon) When I reached the page titled "Birds" I saw another picture of our friend the puffin. I stopped and smiled at the puffin's colorful beak and pearly white plummage. My attention was then drawn to the caption below, which read pelican. Pelican, indeed I was looking at what was obviously a puffin, so why would the text below read pelican. Not only was the puffin pictured on the cover with the correct caption, but on the page labeled "Rivers and Lakes" there was a picture of a pelican, which was obviously different then the mislabeled puffin on the "Birds" page. It absolutely bewilders me that such an amateur mistake could be made by St. Martin's Publishing Press, a name I have come to respect. While this book deserves commending for being made from "sustainable forests", I would not recommend it unless you want your child to be scarred for life, forever confusing the humble puffin with the obviously different, bucket-beaked pelican. But this is not the only lie. If you, like I did, took the time to count up the pictures then you would reach a total of 101, leading you to believe that there is a bonus animal. Alas, you would be incorrect, in truth there are less than 100 animals. The book does not live up to this promise of 100 animals since penguin, lion, snake, moth, zebras, elephant, and owl were all repeated in the book. Apparently "Priddy Books: big ideas for little people" thought they could outsmart the good people of the US and Canada.Read more ›

This book was OK. Me and my little one preferred My Big Animal Book instead and would recommend that one over this.
