We had a bit of trouble tuning the harp, and probably overtightened it in the process, as the string "popped" within the first 10 minutes of use. My advice: go slow, make very minor adjustments. Although it does come with a replacement string, there are no instructions on where to get ADDITIONAL replacements strings. Nor is there any info on the First Act website. I emailed the manufacturer and received this info: "Our lap harps use standard electric guitar strings (specifically, a . 015-gauge unwound steel string that would be tuned to the note "G" on a guitar) which can be purchased at any store that sells musical instrument accessories. You may want to check stores that specialize in guitars and guitar accessories, as those stores are more likely to sell individual strings so you won't have to buy an entire pack."

This would have been very helpful to include with the documentation. My kids really enjoyed it, but I was disappointed with the way it uses just one string for the entire harp. When the string breaks, the entire harp needs to be restrung. We ended up returning this harp and purchased a different brand (Music Maker) with 15 notes (8 strings).

I ran across a lady who had one of these and could not tune it. I brought it home to tune for her. My husband picked it up, along with one of the song sheets and played a song. He has always liked the thought of playing music, but never been able to. He liked that one so much that we ordered one for him. I contacted First Act and requested that they look into providing more song sheets. It may or may not happen. So, I traced the shape of the song sheet onto a piece of paper. Then, I made light lines where the strings would cross. This I scanned into my computer and printed onto card stock. I have used these to work out several more songs for him to play. He likes my versions better than the originals.

This instrument is a simple and fun one for any child to learn basic music theory and skills. However, this specific one only comes with the song sheets provided and does not offer any extra packets of song sheets so that the child isn't stuck learning the same twelve songs. I ordered it and tried to use song sheets for a similar lapharp from another company, but the sheet would not fit the frame of the instrument. I looked everywhere, from the First Act website to other Amazon products, but couldn't find any song sheet packets that would work with this lap harp.

This unusual instrument captured my interest because I thought it might amuse my four-year old nephew as well as give us a look at a working "lap harp" or as it known by some, a "plucked psaltery." [WARNING: The term "lap harp" can be confusing to net shoppers: the term can mean an instrument in the trapezoid shape--like this First Act version featured on this page, and it can also mean a small, folk-type harp that can be held on one's lap and played with two hands. Apparently, there are various versions of lap harps. So, please do a bit of reading and research to be sure of the instrument you want to purchase. I think First Act may even have two versions of the harp as well!]

What we like about this product:

First Act products are usually high interest introductions to music. This harp is fun for family time, and it provides an interesting element to the family / play room. It's the kind of object you just want to touch and to mess with for a while. The user-friendly, sturdy music cards and note system make it easy for young people and adults (with little or no music training) to create real music, simple songs, within just a few minutes of learning / trying. Our favorite cards are "Ode to Joy," "Amazing Grace," and "On Top of Old Smokey." Other cards are the following: "Camptown Races," "Amazing Grace," "Blow the Man Down," "Home on the Range," "London Bridge," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Rock-A-Bye Baby," "Yankee Doodle," and the Tuning Card.

This lap harp is a great, non-threatening way to encourage people to explore sounds, patterns, and music. Playing the harp builds a person's self-esteem and confidence as well as critical thinking and listening skills. We like the size and the shape of the product.

We bought a lap harp for our home use when we were in Tennessee years ago. Our grandchildren love to use it when they are here so we wanted to get one as a birthday gift for a grandchild. They are not something that is available in local stores and the one we just bought through Amazon was equal quality to the one we had and at a lower price. It also has the additional features of a storage pocket machined into the top with a pivoting retainer to store the tuning key plus it has an oversized pick that is easy for the kids to hold and it makes it easy to store by sliding it between (over and under) 3 strings. As with any string instrument it will need tuning and the short ears of the tuning wrench may tempt some to move the post more than the slight tweak of a turn that is usually enough to bring it back into tune (provided that you have a piano or other instrument to use as a reference).
The one negative is the limited music supply. Combine that with the fact that the angles on the side bars that locate the music are not universal between brands which means that sheets from other brands are not usable. The only options are to make your own sheets and mark them for the songs you want or modify the outline of sheets made for another brand.
