In the beginning, pieces can be taught either by rote and or by reading, depending on the student. Harmonically, blues patterns are presented in the key of C with the primary chords C, F, and G in root position. Rhythmically, the student plays whole note, half note chords or quarter note broken chords, with occasional walking bass lines. Blue notes are used, and phrases tend to be simple and easy to grasp melodically. As the book progresses, pieces grow somewhat harder, but not unreasonably so. One basic plus for First Adventures in Jazz is that it provides an opportunity for the student to begin "noodling" around on the piano/keyboard early on in their studies with basic structures provided. Also, it rewards the student with instant gratification in that the student hears familiar musical styles. First Adventures in Jazz is a promising series that should help enliven any studio's teaching program.

JazzKids First Adventures in Jazz is catchy!,
By A Customer
This review is from: First Adventures in Jazz (Textbook Binding)
This book has some extremely catchy songs for kids. I have been teaching these songs to my students for some time now and they love them! This book works especially well with kids ages 6-9 who want to learn something other than Classical music, even though I use this book in conjunction with Classical music.
