4.0 out of 5 stars perfectly adequate
This does all I required. It is not very heavy and has key and combination locks so it is versatile. Overall, not too expensive, not too heavy and keeps prying fingers from your valuables.

This is not a Honeywell product. It is a Honeywell licensed product made in China for the US company, SISCO. The 'safe' is well constructed, but it is not a 'safe'. It is a lock-box. Although the steel used for the box is not exceptionally heavy, the edges are rolled to make prying with a tool much harder. In comparison to the Stack-On wall safe I ordered at the same time, it is more resistant to forced entry. (The Stack-On safe has a door about as thick as three layers of 18ga steel. The steel is soft and can easily be bent outward using a heavy screwdriver.) To be reasonably secure, the safe should be bolted to a wall or to a very sturdy shelf. The lock was simple to program and batteries were included. It is a 'fair' choice as a lock up for a home defense pistol. While it is fast and easy to get into, provided you do not squirrel the key somewhere, the lock 'beep' is VERY loud. So, you better get the combination right the first time in a tactical situation, or the home invader is going to know where you are and what you are trying to do.

Keeps the meds safe from the kids. The beep is what I would have expected in as much as volume goes. Call it medium. MUCH better than a latch type lock box, but, certainly not heavy duty nor bank level of security! It is double bolt, but, the outside edge of the box I believe could easily either be drilled out or mangled up pretty easily with a crow bar and a good and heavy flat edged screwdriver and some determination.
However. We just needed it to keep our medications safe. That job it will do very well.
Very pleased. Feeling great about the security level it gives. Very happy all in all. Just what we needed at a very affordable price.
One thing that I can live with or without, but I am going to check into, is that the photos show a shelf inside. Ours did not come with, nor mention on the box that it came in, any shelf. Just a buyer beware thing. No shelf. Pictures are wrong. As it stands now, 4-14-2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap safe, hard to game, April 5, 2011

This review is from: First Alert 2025F Anti-Theft Safe, 0.28 Cubic Foot, Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
I need a safe that can actually keep visitors out of the credit cards and pharmaceuticals. I previously ordered the Neiko Fit Anywhere safe. The safe worked flawlessly. The problem was that the safe had a lock that was intended to open the safe when the batteries failed in the digital key pad. The lock, however, was easily picked with a paper clip!. The First Alert branded safe has a more sophisticated lock system. The first line of defense is the digital keypad. Just follow the directions to program the number combo you want. You can also use a letter A or B. But to actually open the safe you have to input the correct password and have the key to actually open the door. Pay attention here. The safe comes with one Master key that will bypass the keypad. You use that when the batteries run out or you lose the password. But for daily use you use the other key. This key has a large black grip. This key is used in combination with the keypad. This black key will not open the safe without the right combo. So the safe has a keypad plus a key. The lock is hard to pick. I don't think an amateur pill-popping locksmith could do it.

I looked into all of the smaller safes on Amazon. I did not want to spend $500 on a simple safe. All I wanted was a safe which was impossible for someone to pick the master lock. I believe this safe fits the requirement. It was packed well and arrived in perfect condition. It comes with Panasonic batteries (AA, two standard keys and one master key. The instructions were clear and simple. There is a tiny non-LED light on the edge of the door. When you open the door and reach along the back where the hinge is, there is a switch for light. It is not automatic. It really does not illuminate well unless you are in total darkness.

On the negative side the safe comes with four rubber feet. The feet are supposed to bolt into pre-drilled holes on the bottom of the safe. The holes are too small and the bolts bind. The feet do stay on, however. They just don't screw in correctly. A minor glitch is the sales sticker on the front of the door. It tells of the features of the safe. The sticker unfortunately uses really sticky glue. The label tears off leaving paper fuzz all over the front of the door. A wet cloth and lots of rubbing will remove the paper and glue.

This is not a real safe. It is not meant to be. It is a lock box. It is not fire resistant. You can bolt it to a shelf or floor to keep someone from walking off with it. Overall it should do what I want it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Safe, October 22, 2009

This is a great affordable safe! This safe has plenty of room to fit all of my valuables including my prescriptions. It also has the extra security of including a key along with the access keycode. The only setup is installing batteries and choosing a combination! I strongly recommend this safe if you are tight for space but need a secure, affordable safe!

Perfect safe to keep things private. Will be almost useless against a real thief as it can be carrietd off or opened with a crow bar. I bought it for my mother. She constantly complains about people going through her things. She is 86 and has healthcare and other visitors. She may be a bit forgetful. The safe gives her peace of mind. I keep the master key at my house. Got exactly what I ordered, thus the five star rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks sturdy enough, no shelf, December 30, 2011

This review is from: First Alert 2025F Anti-Theft Safe, 0.28 Cubic Foot, Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recently got this product as a means to store my handgun in my house. While the safe looks pretty secure, its obvious that it wont stop a determined criminal. As a handgun safe, it looks like it will serve the purpose, will hold a gun (maybe 2), my cleaning stuff, a dessicant pack, and a box or 2 of ammo with not much room left to spare. The speaker is incredibly loud for a gun safe, though after taking it apart it looks like some simple soldering can fix that. If you're really ambitious you could probably mount a pot across it and make it volume adjustable. Though another reviewer mentioned it, I didn't have any problem with the feet going on. Though the bolts do bind a bit, just use a big #3 phillips head, and I'd suggest running the screws through the holes once without the feet on first to ensure they'll go properly. In all for the price, I don't think you'll find a much better safe for deterring nosy guests or kids from getting inside, but it probably wont stop a determined thief.

2.0 out of 5 stars Busted, April 13, 2010

Unfortunately, I must have received a defective product. After inserting the key, entering the manufacturer's combination and successfully opening the safe I was able to recode the combination to my own number with no trouble at all. Then when I tried to close the safe and test the new combination, the key would not turn all the way to the locked position. I also could not remove the key in any position...it was stuck in the keyhole. After many attempts at trying to persuade the key to turn and fully lock, with the door both open and closed, I gave up and am returning this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars If it's missing a part, it takes a miracle to receive it, December 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: First Alert 2025F Anti-Theft Safe, 0.28 Cubic Foot, Gray (Tools & Home Improvement)
When I ordered this safe, it arrived missing the knob required to open the safe door. Quite problematic if you want to actually use the thing. The instructions for the safe tell you to call them rather than return the safe. Well in order for them to send you the knob (and keep in mind if you're a cunning thief, this knob does nothing to help you crack open the safe if you don't have the code) they make you get a notarized piece of paper saying you're the owner and fax it to them. Give me a break! So rather than being able to use my safe right away, it took almost two weeks between finding time to go to a notary and them sending the missing part. Another issue with this safe is nothing seems to be mounted 100% correctly. It takes a lot of fiddling to get the door to close correctly, to get the lock secure, etc. I probably should have just returned the thing to begin with.
