Lots of Features / Thoughtful Design, November 18, 2004
This review is from: First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E (Electronics)
The First Alert WX-167 is a thoughtfully designed Public Alert receiver that offers a lot of features at a reasonable price.
Like all SAME receivers, the WX-167 allows you to filter alerts by state and county... a significant improvement over old style weather radios. However, this radio can be further configured to sound alerts for only the events that are important to you.
Things I really like about this receiver:
* Excellent custom alert filtering
* Super easy programming via the radio's function knob.
* Five alerting options (i.e. - voice/message, siren/message, voice/event, siren/event, or silent).
* Good reception and sound quality.
* 24-hour battery backup in case of power failure.
* A lit display that tilts for easy viewing at any angle.
* Jacks for adding an external antenna and/or alerting device.
* PC port, which allows additional alerts to be added (at the factory) should more become available.
* Decent chassis design and simple button layout
* A well-written user manual.
A few nitpicks:
* The radio sounds an alarm if it hasn't received a SAME message (real or test) for 10 days. IMO, blinking lights and a scrolling text message would have been sufficient for this kind of "alert".
* Alerts are completely removed from memory after they expire. Many other receivers keep the last 10 or so expired alerts in memory, which can be used to verify that the radio is actually receiving NWS data.
* Backup power is supplied by 5 AA batteries, which means you'll need to keep a few extra on hand if you normally buy AA's by the 4-pack.
* 90-day warranty. (Many competitors offer a full one-year warranty.)
All in all, I am very pleased with the features, performance, and reliability of this receiver and would recommend it to others.

Very Satisfied, September 5, 2005
This review is from: First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E (Electronics)
I am very pleased with the unit so far. I haven't received any alerts as yet (no storms in my area since I purchased the unit) but I feel this unit should be standard equipment in any home just like a smoke detector. Setting it up was easy and you can turn off alerts that you don't wish to receive. I initially installed alkaline batteries for backup but have since replaced them with rechargeable since there is a battery charger included in the unit. The battery backup allows the unit to still provide alerts when the house power is out.
Update: After several months of ownership, the unit has sounded warnings on three occasions: "flood warnings". A siren sounds first followed by NOAA radio voice broadcast of the warning. A red light flashes when warnings are in effect. The LCD display also displays the warning in ticker tape mode. After you've received the warning, you can press the "off button" to turn off NOAA radio. I placed the unit in my bedroom, near a window as recommended, so that I would be sure to hear it when sleeping. The siren can be heard throughout my house.
The unit also receives a test signal from NOAA radio on regular basis and is suppose to warn you if no signal has been received. So far reception has been good.
I initially set the SAME codes for my area as well as an area to the west reasoning that I would get an earlier warning of weather heading our way. I'm rethinking that option, since I have received warnings at 3 A.M. that didn't apply to my area.

Huge waste of money, October 26, 2006
This review is from: First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E (Electronics)
This radio is a huge waste of money and not worth purchasing. It functioned properly for a few weeks after I programmed it and then started throwing error messages on a regular basis. Then, it would cease to function about every two weeks - be completely dead. This necessitated disconnecting it from the power source, removing the back up batteries then replacing them and reconnecting it, and reprogramming ALL the functions and settings. It would then operate for another couple of weeks, and then stop again...the whole thing had to be repeated. I have finally disconnected it permanently and it is going in the garbage. I am purchasing a Metro radio and recommend that anyone in the market for a weather radio buy ANY one but this First Alert piece of shoddy workmanship.
