While radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, high concentrations of radon gas in the home can be hazardous to you and your family's health. Radon can seep into your home's basement or crawl space through cracks in the foundation or walls, openings or spaces around sump pumps and drains, or construction joints or flaws. The First Alert radon test kit is listed under the EPA radon gas measurement proficiency program and can be completed in as few as two to three days. Included in the cost is the lab fee for an EPA listed lab and a return mailer. The test results are returned to you within 72 hours of lab receipt, and include the recommended next steps you will need to ensure the health of your household. --Bree Norlander

First Alert Radon Test Kit

Test Your Home

You should test for radon. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon. EPA also recommends testing in schools. Testing is inexpensive and easy - it should only take a few minutes of your time.

  • Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher
  • Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still pose a risk, and in many cases may be reduced
  • Testing is easy and inexpensive

The kit has easy to follow instructions. You set it in an appropriate place, wait 48 hours, fill out a form, put everything in a supplied envelope, add 2 stamps, and send it out. If a few weeks your result arrives. In my case I had to call to get it but it was available on-line.

NOTE - other products want $ for the lab test. This product includes it.

Chances are if you are reading reviews for a carbon-based Radon test kit, you already have a general idea of how they work and what they test for. This test kit comes in a small box, it contains a sealed tray of a charcoal-like substance that you sit in the spot where you want to run the test for 48-72 hours. After that time, you put the kit back into the included envelope along with a completed information card, seal it up, and mail it away for testing to a lab. Simple enough.

To sum it all up, I was very satisfied with this product from start to finish. Here is my review, focusing on a few key areas that I feel need to be addressed based on reading the product information and other customer reviews:

Ease of Use:
I found this kit to be as simple to use as it could possibly have been. The only contents of the box are exactly what is necessary. The instructions are short, but thorough enough that they provide you with everything needed to maximize your chances of a successful and accurate test. It goes over the basics of how to use the kit, recommended places to place it, conditions your house needs to be in, etc. Once you've run it for 48-72 hours, you just record the necessary information on the info card, drop it in the envelope, and off it goes to the lab.

Hidden/Additional Fees:
The price of this kit includes the lab analysis and results reporting, so there are no "hidden" fees. However, the kit gives you the option to pay an additional $10 for "rush processing". I did not opt for this, so I can't comment on how much faster the results would have been, but I assume this would be useful for things like real estate transactions. This test was only for my own information in a house I already own, so speed of results wasn't a top priority for me.

We have lived in our home for about 8 years, and I have done a few radon tests in the past, both prior to and after we had a radon mitigation system installed. Since a few years had passed, I wanted to do another quick check to ensure our radon level was low. I had never purchased a First Alert test kit before, but I was drawn in by the price and overall good reviews. Weary of the reviews that mentioned never receiving results after submitting the test kit for analysis, I was careful to print very clearly on the submission card. In addition, there was a form inside the kit that said my results would be sent to me more quickly by email if I went to a website and entered the same information that is on the card. Sure, it was duplicate effort, but I figured it would improve my chances of not having any troubles. It only took a few minutes to do this. I was very satisfied to receive my test results, as promised, via email within just a few days of mailing the kit. I opted to mail the kit by standard U.S. Mail (no Priority or Express delivery required) by applying stamps to the return mailer. Several days after I received the email, I also received a copy of my test results in the mail. As for reliability, the radon level reported was consistent with my past tests conducted after I had the radon mitigation system installed. Therefore, I feel that I got a good value and great service on this economical kit. I would recommend it to anybody.

Be aware that you need to put the test in the middle of the room and leave it for 2-3 days (not easy when you have toddlers). Also, it only covers that area, so you may need more than one test.

Here's a clue for the other reviewer: if you need to do 2 tests then you need to buy 2 kits.

Here's another clue: if you need a timely response then check before you buy. If your realtor can't help you - get a new realtor!

This kit is easy to use, simple instructions, and accurate results. The main point that I appreciate is that they don't try to nail you with extra lab costs after purchase like some other kits I've seen.

I was very impressed with this test kit. I ordered from Amazon and it arrived in 5 days. I did order with some other items so I was able to take avantage of the Amazon free shipping. Very simple to use with there easy to understand instructions. I used this tester in my basement and left it for two days. The instructions was to put 3 first class stamps ($1.26) for mailing back to lab and since no stamps went to the post office. I was told it would cost me $1.34 to mail by first class. Clerk saw what First Alert said about postage and told me that they were wrong and that if I had sent it with only 3 stamps it might have gone thru or it could have been returned to me for not enough postage (at least she was honest about this). Because of the thickness of the envelope and the nature of the item was the reason for the increase postage. It took 7 days to receive my report from Md. to Tx. by way of email. You can also request your report by mail. I was very impressed also by the very detail report with additional detail information about radon gas.
