While radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, high concentrations of radon gas in the home can be hazardous to you and your family's health. Radon can seep into your home's basement or crawl space through cracks in the foundation or walls, openings or spaces around sump pumps and drains, or construction joints or flaws. The First Alert radon test kit is listed under the EPA radon gas measurement proficiency program and can be completed in as few as two to three days. Included in the cost is the lab fee for an EPA listed lab and a return mailer. The test results are returned to you within 72 hours of lab receipt, and include the recommended next steps you will need to ensure the health of your household. --Bree Norlander

My name is Owen Reese and I am the Business Manager at Alpha Energy Labs, where we analyze First Alert Radon test kits. I wanted to submit some tips to better help our customers. I am submitting a 1 star review so that I am not artificially increasing our product's rating here on Amazon. If you have any questions or concerns about the product, I can be reached directly at owen.reese@alphaenergylabs.com and would be happy to help you. Our phone number is 800-324-5928.

In our experience, the vast majority of frustrations in the radon testing process are due to mailing issues. Please be aware of the following:

* Tests must arrive in our lab within 10 days of the end of the test for best results. After 12 days, we cannot get a valid result for the kit. All test kits are Gamma Counted (the time sensitive part of analysis) the day they are received in our laboratory, so once they reach our lab, the "clock stops" on the 12 day "timer".

* FIRST CLASS MAIL IS NOT RECOMMENDED. The test kits are small parcels and must be hand processed, instead of machine processed. This makes them substantially slower to ship than other items. We do not recommend using First Class mail for shipping our kits. There is never a delivery time guarantee for First Class. It is not a day definite service and the Post Office cannot know when your kit will arrive. Please save yourself the headache of a mailing issue and spend the extra few dollars to ship with a better service. Over 95% of the kits that arrive late in our lab were shipped with First Class mail. It is our opinion that it is better to spend a few extra dollars on shipping and save yourself the trouble of purchasing another kit, testing again, and paying to mail it again.

The kit has easy to follow instructions. You set it in an appropriate place, wait 48 hours, fill out a form, put everything in a supplied envelope, add 2 stamps, and send it out. If a few weeks your result arrives. In my case I had to call to get it but it was available on-line.

NOTE - other products want $ for the lab test. This product includes it.

Chances are if you are reading reviews for a carbon-based Radon test kit, you already have a general idea of how they work and what they test for. This test kit comes in a small box, it contains a sealed tray of a charcoal-like substance that you sit in the spot where you want to run the test for 48-72 hours. After that time, you put the kit back into the included envelope along with a completed information card, seal it up, and mail it away for testing to a lab. Simple enough.

To sum it all up, I was very satisfied with this product from start to finish. Here is my review, focusing on a few key areas that I feel need to be addressed based on reading the product information and other customer reviews:

Ease of Use:
I found this kit to be as simple to use as it could possibly have been. The only contents of the box are exactly what is necessary. The instructions are short, but thorough enough that they provide you with everything needed to maximize your chances of a successful and accurate test. It goes over the basics of how to use the kit, recommended places to place it, conditions your house needs to be in, etc. Once you've run it for 48-72 hours, you just record the necessary information on the info card, drop it in the envelope, and off it goes to the lab.

Hidden/Additional Fees:
The price of this kit includes the lab analysis and results reporting, so there are no "hidden" fees. However, the kit gives you the option to pay an additional $10 for "rush processing". I did not opt for this, so I can't comment on how much faster the results would have been, but I assume this would be useful for things like real estate transactions. This test was only for my own information in a house I already own, so speed of results wasn't a top priority for me.

Be aware that you need to put the test in the middle of the room and leave it for 2-3 days (not easy when you have toddlers). Also, it only covers that area, so you may need more than one test.

I was very impressed with this test kit. I ordered from Amazon and it arrived in 5 days. I did order with some other items so I was able to take avantage of the Amazon free shipping. Very simple to use with there easy to understand instructions. I used this tester in my basement and left it for two days. The instructions was to put 3 first class stamps ($1.26) for mailing back to lab and since no stamps went to the post office. I was told it would cost me $1.34 to mail by first class. Clerk saw what First Alert said about postage and told me that they were wrong and that if I had sent it with only 3 stamps it might have gone thru or it could have been returned to me for not enough postage (at least she was honest about this). Because of the thickness of the envelope and the nature of the item was the reason for the increase postage. It took 7 days to receive my report from Md. to Tx. by way of email. You can also request your report by mail. I was very impressed also by the very detail report with additional detail information about radon gas.
