The First Alert 9V Double Sensor Smoke & Fire Detector combines an ionization sensor for detection of fast, flaming fires and a photoelectric sensor for smoldering fire detection in one unit. This innovative design provides for optimal protection. Both systems are powered by the same 9-volt battery. Each unit has two test buttons which check all functions. A bug screen reduces nuisance alarms and a twist-in bracket makes installation easy. First Alert is a clear innovator in their field, offering the only full line of carbon monoxide alarms designed to meet every need.

Have had 4 units for a year. With the time change weekend here, I started to change the battery in the utility room detector. Got the unit down OK. Changed the battery with a new alkaline one, observed the proper polarity. Any time I got close to twisting it onto it's mounting bracket, the alarm would go off until I took the battery out again. Ended up hauling out a stepladder so I could get close enough to the unit to see what I was doing. Even with the unit properly attached to the bracket, the unit was still falsely triggering. Did not even attempt to replace the batteries in the other 3 units before checking with the manufacturer. Compared with the Black & Decker and GE units that are hinged for battery replacement, I find these First Alert units very difficult to use.

I have one in each room in my house. Mounting this unit to the bracket is a bit of a pain; but even so it takes only 30 seconds to align it properly.
