3.0 out of 5 stars This is OK...
This storybook bible is OK. Certainly not great and certainly not one I would recommend. It's shallow and there are several inaccuracies. One off-hand I'll mention: It took Noah many, many YEARS to build the Ark not mere months (p. 30). Also, many stories have been omitted. A better choice for this age group would be "The Big Picture Story Bible".

1.0 out of 5 stars Missed the point, May 1, 2010
This review is from: First Bible Stories (Hardcover)
I found the stories to be so abridged and "re-formed" that they often miss the point of the original biblical passages. For example, "am I my bother's keeper" is not only key to the Christian ethic, but also a key part of interpreting aspects of Western religious literature. However it is cleansed from the story, as is the satanic nature of the snake in the Garden of Eden, etc.

I will go on searching for something that better depicts the intention of the biblical stories and go back to telling the stories by interpreting them on-the-fly from the "original"!

5.0 out of 5 stars a gorgeous children's bible, February 20, 2008
This review is from: First Bible Stories (Hardcover)
my family owns many children's bibles, and this one is a fabulous favorite..... it is a sturdy, gorgeous hardback book that feels and looks and seems like a real bible, a book of grand importance, with gilt edges and a ribbon closure... the illustrations are simple but helpful for visualizing the story... the illustrations are not as cartoonish as some children's bibles......the stories are well written, simplified, but not too simple..... a good start for a young child to have read to them....but also completely appropriate for a ten year old to read alone .....

4.0 out of 5 stars a nice starter Bible, June 3, 2004
This review is from: First Bible Stories (Hardcover)
This would make a good first Bible for a youngster, either to be read to, or for when the child has become proficient enough in reading skills to do so alone, as the language First Bible Stories is written in is fluid, simple, and easily understood.
The illustrations by John Dillow are plentiful, briskly drawn and colorful; The expressive faces of the people have a cartoon quality, and the animals are adorable. There are plenty of cats and dogs in the pictures too, like a cat with the farm animals in the manger, and two dogs with the people listening to The Sermon on the Mount.

The pages are thick with a matte finish, and it is sturdily bound and quite a heavy volume. Each story has the Bible chapter reference, and Jillian Harker has done an excellent job with this adaptation; with 30 stories from the Old Testament, and 35 from the New Testament, there should be enough wonderful reading for many years of a child's life.
"Everyone who listened to Jesus' stories was amazed at how simply they told the truth of God" (page 273).

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate Stories great illustrations, July 17, 2008
This review is from: First Bible Stories (Paperback)
This book has very accurate stories and very nice illustrations. I have only found a few places where I have had to add to or change up the story slightly for my child to get the full picture. I have looked at a number of 4-8 year old Bible story books and this is by far the best.

Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best preschooler Bible, June 9, 2005
This review is from: First Bible Stories (Hardcover)
I love this children's Bible, and so do my kids! This Bible has the perfect amount of detail and information to keep my children (ages 3 and 5) interested. The pictures add to the story and are beautifully drawn. We own many other children's Bibles -- most are too "babyish" for them now, or else too much text with not enough pictures. Not this one -- the perfect balance. It also includes some stories that are hard to find in most children's Bibles, such as the story of Ruth and Naomi, the tower of Babel, and many of the parables that Jesus told. I highly recommend this to any Christian wanting to share God's word with their preschooler.
