If you are a "would-be investor" then this is the book I would strongly recommend. 1.0 out of 5 stars Politically packed text book
This book reads like a textbook. While it covers a breath of topics, it does so lacking any of the excitement that is inherent in investing. I found the political comments littered throughout the book (such as the benefits of socially responsible investing and the author's dislike of investing in defense companies) inappropriate and nothing more than soapbox banter. I was...

If you are a "would-be investor" then this is the book I would strongly recommend. From stocks, futures and mutual funds to bonds and real estate, it gives an overview of each facet of the investment industry and explains the jargon and phrases in practical and easy to understand language. It even suggests a specific diversified model portfolio which new investors will find very useful. Unlike a previous reviewer I found the author's leaning toward socially responsible investing both interesting and refreshing. If your money is currently earning next to nothing in a bank savings account and you want to learn more about your investment alternatives, this be THE book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's an excellent book for beginners., March 6, 1999
This review is from: The First Book of Investing, Revised 2nd Edition: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely (Paperback)
This book is very helpful to those people that are completely new to the world of investing. The basic terms are very clearly explained, and the the different types of investing are carefully introduced so as not to overwhelm the reader with too much information. If you have never owned a stock before or do not know what a bond is, then this is the book that you should read first. I found that this book explained everything to me that I did not know about investing basics. After reading this book, you will have a much easier time reading more advanced books on investing. I recommend this book to all beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone who knows nothing about investing!, November 24, 2000
If mutual funds, stock options, and equities make your head spin, this book is for you. Case has written a book that is easy to read and understand yet remains information packed. Even after finishing the book, it makes an excellent reference. The first section is a logically organized tutorial into the wide world of investing. What I really like about this book is that it overlooks no investment. As a high school student short on cash, it was refreshing to read about how I can begin investing with as little as $50. The only problem I have with the book is Chapter 12 "Socially Responsible Investing." Case continually uses nuclear power as a market example that is not socially responsible. This is not totally accurate. The reason socially responsible funds don't invest in nuclear power is because often time by investing in nuclear power you also invest in fossil fuel utilities as well. Besdies Case's cynicism in Chapter 12, I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for people without investing knowledge!!!, November 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Book of Investing, Revised 2nd Edition: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely (Paperback)
I have to admit that this book is the best one I have read so far that is dummy proof. I did not had any background in investing and I could understand everything. Also, I was very fear to take my money away from a bank. But Samuel Case made an excellent job explaining this fascinating world and how to start from the beginning with only $50.00. Now I can follow the idea of a bull vs a bear market etc. I hope I can meet this author in a future. Excellent book for beginners. Nice ideas and thoughts. I hope more college students read books like this so they can learn the importance of starting to invest early. Recommended A+++++.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful book for the novice investor., February 26, 1999
This review is from: The First Book of Investing, Revised 2nd Edition: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely (Paperback)
The book was well written and easy to read and understand. I was a little put off by the insinuation in the chapter entitled "Socially Responsible Investing", that investing in Defense industries was somehow socially unacceptable. Other than that I recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for absolute beginners and intermediate level, December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Book of Investing, Revised 2nd Edition: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely (Paperback)
This is an excellent book if you want to begin to invest your money. It assumes that you know nothing and guides you step by step. Extremely readable (I read it over a weekend), it gives you all the necessary working knowledge to start investing. I also appreciated its careful approach and several warnings against risky techniques and investments. My wife, who has just completed an MBA, thinks that the book is very well organized.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the only book that I could follow from page one on., August 3, 1997

This review is from: The First Book of Investing, Revised 2nd Edition: The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Safely (Paperback)
I am in my mid-fifties, newly-single, and female. I had had no experience with money and was terrified to try and chart my own financial course. This book makes me believe I can do it and gives me the vocabulary and support I need to try. Other books had some of the same information but it was not organized for the novice and I had great difficulty in following them. This one was written just for people like me! Thanks

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Place To Start When You Dont Have A Clue, November 21, 2002
This book is 3 years old now as of this review I write, if it was up to date Id give it 5 stars...it still has LOTS of relevent and important information for today and tomorrow because the fact of the matter is is that the rules will always be the same for SMART and SAFE investing found in this book. There are many excellent resources and websites listed too that really help...if you are fed up living paycheck to paycheck, get going with this and take charge of your life...or would you rather live a life you always complain about that??
