More About the Author

I'm C.C.Cole, award-winning medieval dark fantasy author of the Gastar Series. The series of four novellas, when completed, follow teen assassin Shevata as she journeys through the history of her home city of Gastar to seek redemption for her past actions and to re-gain her soul.

The first novella, "Act of Redemption" was published in 2009. Shevata makes a mistake by killing a group of evil priests without a death order. Two centuries later, she is released from imprisonment, realizing her soul was removed. Along with a trio of soldiers from the past, they defend the remnants of Shepeople remaining in the fallen city of Gastar from the evil demon lord Zermon.

The second novella, "Children of Discord" was published in 2011. Shevata searches for the evil treacherous boy Goldeon, who assisted the enemy in the fall of Gastar. She is summoned back to Gastar by a group of unlikely allies. The growing city has forgotten much of the city's dark history, and the clash of the two dangerous children place the unknowing people of the city in danger. Shevata takes her first steps to re-claim her humanity at the book's dramatic end.

The lead character Shevata won an action heroine poll on Goodreads, "Act of Redemption" has been listed as #1 on Goodreads' Best Independent Novel, and "Children of Discord" won an NABE pinnacle award for fiction in 2011.

Mississippi is my home, I live a suburban life with my family. Schooled in the medical field, along with writing, other interests include martial arts, adopted greyhounds, medieval and 20th century history.

While reading this book, I found myself transported to the fantasy land of Gastar, with all its many exciting and mystical characters. The book has a Conan the Barbarian meets King Arthur vibe, with an old school, Saturday morning TV show type flavor; that I enjoyed so much as a child. The characters were totally engaging and lifelike. This is a must read for all my fellow Dungeon and Dragon fans, but be warned, once you start reading the book, you will not be able to put it down. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Overwhelming odds are designed to be overcome. "Act of Redemption: First Book of the Gastar Series" tells the story of young Shevata, tasked with the rough task of defending Gastar, one of the last outposts of humanity in existence, as they face off against the forces of Hell and the undead. "Act of Redemption" is a fantasy that genre fans will delight in, recommended.

Act of Redemption: Strong Female Lead Makes for a Swashbuckling (and Dark) Adventure

Act of Redemption is a dark fantasy novel targeted to young adult readers. Act of Redemption centers around a strong female lead character, Shevata, the last of a generation of children trained as instruments of war by a kingdom on the edge of destruction. In appearance Shevata may be a sixteen year old waif, but underneath the slight frame of a teenage girl hides a being with the skills and instincts of a Hashishin assassin from the medieval Holy Land.

Shevata is bread for one purpose, to hunt and destroy the Hell demons invading her world and their Abbiasian Priests who are their allies. Her zeal and effectiveness as a killer has unforeseen and dire consequences for the kingdom her blade is meant to defend, however, as against the strict instructions of her mentor, the Dragon Harathgus, Shevata tracks down and destroys the last high priest of Abbias. Though her intentions were noble, the death of such a powerful adversary leaves a power vacuum, a void hastily filled by an even more deadly enemy.

Act of Redemption offers an interesting premise. Can a culture be driven so far to the brink that it would choose to use its children as weapons of war? One cannot help but be reminded of the `child assembly lines' instituted in Nazi Germany with the indoctrination and militarization of Hitler youth. The story is driven by the strong female lead of Shevata and though a little rough in places, interesting dialogue that does its job to develop the plot line. Though the story deal with issues such as demonic entities and human sacrifice, the author also has a good sense of her target market and avoids graphic detail. Language features some minor cursing.

Act of Redemption by C. C. Cole
Review by Thomas Stone

ACT OF REDEMPTION, by author C. C. Cole, is a young adult fantasy and the first book in a planned series of four, entitled the Gastar Series. The theme of the tale is basically one of good versus evil containing a parallel sub-plot that leads the reader to question the use of violence altogether. However, there is still plenty of violence and all of it in the form of pitted battles between human and demonic forces.

Gastar is a city in Cole's fantasy story that is under attack by forces of evil in the form of demons borne from Hell. Their ultimate goal is to decimate the entire population of Gastar and to annex a new territory that will be ruled by the son (Behemeth) of a powerful demon (Zermon). In order to create more demons for Zermon, women are periodically kidnapped from Gastar and made to bear demon spawn.

Like any good war story, there are spies and heroes, the chief heroine being a young female named Shevata, Shevata retains the form of a sixteen year old girl, although she is considerably older and has prior suffered twenty years as a prisoner in Hell. Upon her escape from Hell, Shevata, along with three resurrected men from a previous demon war, becomes the savior of Gastar. Shevata has superior fighting skills and magic swords (along with a heavy skillet) that she uses to good effect in destroying the demon enemy. Shevata's problem is that she must bear the burden of knowing she must destroy souls in order to save souls. Her guilt does not stop her from utilizing her skills but it does seem to separate her from her comrades.

As a new author, Cole's prose is not yet fully refined, but it is certainly good enough for the type of story she wants to convey.

Shevata and her friends take on the underworld, demons drop dead easily under her deft assassins' sword. A very good fantasy action book, great for teens interested in the dark fantasy genre.

I have a busy schedule, but I enjoy reading. I like to get carried away in a book, but there's no time anymore. This short read took me away for about 4 hours. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I can't wait for the next in the series, for a good rainy Sunday afternoon escape.

It would be great if the author could embellish the characters a little further, like JRR Tolkien brings his characters to life. This would also be a good book for Manga fans. I could place the entire storyline into a Manga movie or book.

The girl power message is very strong, as all the demons are very afraid of her, small or not.
