This review is from: The First Book for Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
This book is a classic -- loaded with helpful information.
There are 2 Pink Panther books -- this one, "The First Book for..." is a condensed version. The full version is "Understanding Diabetes." Both are awesome.

I am a school nurse and have a newly diagnosed diabetic child. This book is a great tool to the child and her family as well as to me. I have been able to assist her with topics that have changed over the years and I knew very little about. Thank you to Dr. Chase.

My teenaged son was recently diagnosed with Type I Diabetes and the hospital gave us the 11th edition of Dr. H. Peter Chase's "A First Book for Understanding Diabetes". It's a great book, and deserves the five stars. Just to let you know - the 12th edition is now published, year 2011. At the time I write this, it is only available from the Children's Diabetes Foundation at Denver. You can check out their website, where it can be purchased on-line, by phone, or you can email and request a form that you can print out and send with a check. While we were in the hospital with our son, the nurse showed us her copy of the larger book by H. Peter Chase, "Understanding Diabetes - 11th Edition", and highly recommended it. We decided to get it, too. That's when I found out that the 11th edition of this full-size 350+ page "Pink Panther" book is out of print, limited availability, with prices to match! Fortunately, the 12th edition of the full sized "Understanding Diabetes" is now also now available from the Children's Diabetes Foundation at Denver, where Dr. Chase works. There is also a 2010 edition Dr. H. Peter Chase's book, "Understanding Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors" available from the Children's Diabetes Foundation at Denver. Perhaps, eventually, the 2011 - 12th editions of the two Pink Panther books will be available at more places.

Much of my nursing career has been spent educating patients on their conditions and how they can manage them. This is a great place to start that process, for adults and children both. Written for parents, I would still suggest it for anyone with a new diabetes background or someone starting insulin.

A First Book for Understanding Diabetes - COMPANION to the 11th edition of "understanding diabetes",
By Audrey O. "Aud" (College Station, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The First Book for Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
This book is a very condensed version of the actual "Understanding Diabetes" 11th Edition. It is little more than a detailed outline. The section on counting carbohydrates is useless. Unless you are well-versed in diabetes (i.e. diabetic educator or endocrinologist), you are wasting your money getting this book. As stated in the title, it is only a "COMPANION to the 11th Edition of 'Understanding Diabetes.' " I would not waste my money on this book, unless I was using the pages as slides for a presentation on the actual book and already had the 11th Edition book memorized.

I was told about this book at a Diabetes Conference and was not disappointed. It reviews the pathophisiology in simple terms. It will be perfect for teaching students and staff.

We use this in a hospital setting to educate children and parents. We have been using this for over 3 years. It is very easy to understand all aspects of diabetes in children. Would recommend to any family wanting to educate themselves or others around children with diabetes.

Mom of a Diabetic 10 year old,
This review is from: The First Book for Understanding Diabetes (Paperback)
My son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 2 years ago. This is the book we got from the hospital. Its a great book for anyone that needs to be educated on the subject. I have a copy that i use all the time, my mother also has a copy and Im sending one to my sister because she will be taking care of him for a week while im on vacation. She can read the book a few times then when i go to explain things to her befor I leave it wont be so confusing. This book is very easy to understand, and read. I would recomend it to anyone who is curious about type 1 diabetes.
