Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Simple stories with large, easy-to-read type and texts. In Mr. Big Brother, Eli is excited because his mom is going to have a baby. Tired of being the youngest in the family, he can't wait for the new babe to arrive so that he and his older brother, John, can have all sorts of exciting adventures with him. But the infant turns out to be a girl. The disappointed sibling finally accepts his new sister, providing a neat, satisfying conclusion. My First Day at Camp is narrated by Anna, who is eager, though a bit apprehensive about going to a day camp where she knows no one. By the time she gets home, however, she can't wait to return. Both stories are illustrated with colorful, engaging pictures on every page. The simple plots move quickly toward the predictable conclusions, and the situations presented reflect common childhood experiences. As fare for beginning readers, these are serviceable selections. Jane Claes, T. J. Lee Elementary School, Irving, TX

From Booklist

Gr. 1, younger for reading aloud. The story is reassuring--Anna is scared on her first day of camp, but she has fun singing and swimming, making masks, and making friends--and the ink-and-watercolor pictures show a diverse, lively group of kids on the bus and then with their counselors at Camp Sunshine. Part of the Bank Street Ready-to-Read series, this is geared in story and vocabulary for beginning readers or for reading aloud with children who are getting ready to read. Hazel Rochman

More About the Author

Ellen Weiss has lost count of how many kids' books she's written, that's how long she's been doing it. There are probably over 200, from board books to chapter books to middle-grade novels, fiction and nonfiction, silly and serious. They have won many awards, and have been adapted into a Disney TV movie and a BBC radio play. Two of them, THE TAMING OF LOLA and PORKY AND BESS, were named Bank Street Best Books of 2010. She loves to collaborate, and she often writes with her husband, Mel Friedman. She also loves to rescue stray dogs, but she had to stop when the aforementioned Mel Friedman told her he would divorce her if she brought home one more filthy, un-housebroken, weird mutt.
