1.0 out of 5 stars Incorrect Readings, January 16, 2008
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
I had very high cholesterol (297) and bought this kit to keep track of my cholesterol. I changed my diet completely and took first check test one month after the diet change and test showed my cholesterol as 229, I took it again two months after my diet change and it showed 149!!!. I couldn't believe that diet change was affecting my cholesterol so much so I went to my doc and asked for a lab test and guess what... my cholesterol was 253!!!.

I have followed the exact instructions that were given in the kit and still the cholesterol levels were off by more than 100 points!, that's insane. This kit doesn't work as they claim.

Do not buy, go to lab to get accurate results.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!, December 16, 2008
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
I bought this exact home test. The morning of my lab test I tested at home first out of curiosity. It said 200. A week after testing at the lab, the results came back as 263! That is way off and products like this shouldn't be on the market. There are too many people that don't go to Doctor's and this testing kit is not accurate by any means!

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate reading, November 5, 2008
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
I tried the version of this kit that included two test kits: one for total cholesterol and one for HDL (it cost about $25 at a Rite-Aid). I followed the instructions to the letter for the total cholesterol count. I was so excited about the low total cholesterol number it gave me! I began thinking new diet was paying off! The following week I had a real test performed at a doctors office and found that the reading given by this kit was about 80 points too low. Bottom line: don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to use, May 7, 2009
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
Bottom line: don't waste your time and money.

The instructions require you to squeeze at least 5-6 drops out of your finger. Even before I stabbed myself, I couldn't believe that that was even possible. After two tries, I have decided that it really cannot be done.

Reading the result is somewhat of a guessing game because after the blood has soaked into the test strip, it says to "Read the scale on the test by finding the very tip of the blue or purple colored line, regardless of how faint the line may be." Granted, it doesn't seem to matter too much if you're off by a few lines in your reading because at least it will put you in the right ballpark. This is assuming that the test is accurate to begin with, which is something that the other reviewers seem to have evidence against.

I haven't gotten a real cholesterol test before so I don't know how accurate this is. My result came back in the "desirable" level so we will see if this was anywhere close to accurate once I get a real test. Keep in mind though that I was unable to follow the instructions to the letter because I simply could not get enough blood to get to the "fill level" of the blood well.

If you bought this at the store and haven't opened it yet, I highly suggest returning it. I certainly wish I had come here before I opened the box.

1.0 out of 5 stars dangerously inaccurate!, June 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
My cholesterol was 288, so I made changes in my diet and started to monitor it dropping using this test every 3 months for an entire year- I watched my cholesterol drop to 220, then 200, then 180, then 140. Wow, I was really impressed until I read the reviews here that this test is inaccurate so I decided to go back to my doctor to be rechecked. Well, my actual cholesterol is 225, nearly 90 points higher than this test is saying! My advice would be don't buy this test or you may be fooling yourself into a false sense of security.

1.0 out of 5 stars lancette sucks, April 21, 2009
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
I bought this test kit to keep track of total cholesterol, but never got a chance to evaluate the results because the lancette device provided didn't provide enough blood (two tries) even though I followed the instructions to the letter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fault maybe in unclear instructions, August 2, 2010

This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
I tested myself with one of these a few years ago the same day that I went to the doctor to be checked. Myself and my doctor were both surprised that it was accurate to within 1 point. I use then from time to time and it seems to be accurate. That being said I think they should include photo examples of exactly what a reading should look like so that people can read them accurately. I have to strain my eyes to see the faintest color change and that is where I take my reading. I think it would be very easy for most people to take a reading from a non-eye straining color change, thus a much lower reading. So the test might be accurate but being able to read the test accurately is definitely a problem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can I give this a Zero?, August 30, 2011
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
There is absolutely nothing GOOD to say about this product.First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests

I followed directions exactly - to the letter. Even using a countdown timer on my cell phone.

I got no results. I tried it AGAIN (there are two test strips included). Again, no results at all. Not wrong ones... but nothing at all. And the kit isn't expired, and the testing strips were in their protective envelopes.

My wallet is $20 lighter. I have two sore fingers full of holes and a bunch of nasty bloody things to get rid of.

Sheesh, they don't even include an alcohol swab in the kit.

And they don't bother to recommend that you sterilize your fingers or even wash your hands before you go stabbing yourself full of holes.

Shame on you, First Check.

1.0 out of 5 stars questionable accuracy, June 28, 2011
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
Totally inconsistant with a lab test taken the same day...a 65 mg/dl difference. The home test registered 65% lower than the lab test..that's scary. Very surprised that the FDA approves these types of very questionable products.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, April 21, 2011

Megoola "megoola" (Central California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: First Check Home Cholesterol Test, Two Single Use Tests (Health and Beauty)
The lancet included with this kit was overkill and I ended up with a huge bruise on my finger.

I followed the directions exactly and it failed to give a result. The finish indicator changed color but nothing else did.

I am going to dig up my receipt and return this waste of money.
