Editorial Reviews

"M Todd Gallowglas is the real deal." - Brandon Sanderson
"This is really great stuff! The characters seem real, three dimensional people, not typical fantasy types." - James Rollins
"Tears of Rage is a fantastical gritty series about faith, dedication, fear, and perseverance. A tale for the times we are in, with realistic characters forced to face their own flaws that are just as dangerous as their enemies. Read it." - Damon Stone, Fantasy Flight Games
"M. Todd Gallowglas has written a compelling tale in 'First Chosen (Tears of Rage)'. The world in which he sets the tale is a vivid, complex world; one in which theology and politics are so intertwined that it is hard to tell where one leaves off and the other begins." - Best in Fantasy Blog
"The pacing kept me engaged, and I have to admit, kept me up past my bedtime on more than one occasion. I can't wait to read the sequel." - Shay Fabbro from, "Writing on the Rocks"

"I wish I could write fight scenes like this." - Jen Wylie, Author of SWEET LIGHT
"The characters are well-drawn and the world is truly fascinating, with its talk of gods and miracles. It is an unconventional design for a fantasy novel, and it works very much to the author's advantage. We get several POV characters to give us different angles on the world, and none of them seem superfluous." - Christopher Kellen

5.0 out of 5 stars First Chosen July 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The world Gallowglas creates is immediate and compelling. The characters are strong, unique, and intriguing. Within the first page I was drawn with curiosity to the magical, spiritual and mortal schemes. The relationships between Celestials, Infernals, and mortals are well developed and refreshing. I found the storyline original and fascinating. As a young woman I can relate to Julianna's passion, angst, and worry with amused familiarity. Her courage and strength of will is inspiring. I look forward to reading more by Gallowglas and will watch his career with interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars The First Chosen will keep you past your bedtime! October 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In a world where gods and goddesses reign supreme, mortals must choose their path, and which gods they will follow. They must choose carefully, because following some gods can mean death.

On the day of her birth, Julianna Taraen was blessed by a Saent of one of the ancient gods, Grandfather Shadow. He has been banished, forced to endure imprisonment for a thousand years.
He bides his time, waiting for the time when Julianna will call out to him, and free him.

When she finally frees Grandfather Shadow, he marks her as the new Lord Morigahn, and orders her to gather his followers and unite them once again. She must somehow stay alive long enough to fulfill her destiny as the Lord Morigahn, which won't be easy with those loyal to Old Uncle Night and All Father Sun trying to kill her!

The author wraps the reader in a world that seems so real. The characters have depth and realism and I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering how Julianna was going to get out of several predicaments! The pacing kept me engaged and I have to admit, kept me up past my bedtime on more than one occasion ; I can't wait to read the sequel to The First Chosen and follow Julianna on her quest to unite the Komati and Morigahnti people.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short but good start February 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Okay so this is a story about a world were the only magic seems to come from gods. Some of the gods are imprisoned and when one gets out he chooses a chosen one. That is pretty much the whole story for this first book. Now there a lot of battles and close calls with a ton of characters introduced but really those two sentences sum it up.

- Short I felt like it was just a little over 100 pages
- Price for the price it could of been longer if this is how the books are going to be priced by the time you get to 600 pages well you do the math
- No info dumps you kind of have to learn the world as you go along while some like this it can be frustrating trying to figure out who anyone is and what they are talking about. Eventually you get it but the first little bit is annoying.
- Lots of characters they seem to pop out of the woodwork all talking about a history you have no idea of.

- It is a gripping plot and moves with a fast pace.
- Interesting world with all the gods both lesser and greater and their interactions.
- Characters are fleshed out with both good and bad points and I cannot remember one of them doing something stupid to further the plot.
- Guns and swords this is one of the better mixes and I always find authors who use this time period of turbulence to have interesting worlds. On this note the world does seem to be thought about and planned out.

I found the book enjoyable the characters believable in a fantasy setting and the setting itself to be interesting. I would recommend this book to those who read the genre however the shortness of this first book and it's price would have me recommend other books before it.

I have been lucky enough to be asked to review First Chosen by the author himself. M. Todd Gallowglas. This is a part of the Blog Tour de Force. First Chosen is set in a beautiful dark and epic fantasy world. It is about a girl (a duchess) named Julianna, who has been chosen as the Lord Morigahn (high priest) to protect and lead the Morigahnti (followers of Grandfather Shadow), physically and spiritually. But she can only do this when she speaks the words that will release Grandfather Shadow, a god who has been held prisoner for 1000 years. When she is put in a frightening and traumatizing situation that causes her to use the words, everyone wants a piece of her. So Julianna is in quite a predicament. Not only does she have lots to learn about those after her and who to trust, she also has to figure out her new found powers and who she is.

I really enjoyed this book. The storytelling was truly out of this world. Gallowglas has created something gorgeous and complex. I love a plot that has so many layers that you can pick a part. Not only is the story deep and compelling, but the characters are as well. Gallowglas wrote it in a way where no one is left out. I love that I get a sense of everyone in the story. There is so much mythology in this book and no matter the species, everyone was playing a game. This book is full of betrayals, secrets and lies. If you want a great story on the battle of good vs. evil, First Chosen is a great choice.

I loved the characters. I loved Julianna. After her initial shock of knowing everything rests on her shoulders, you see her growing into it. It was a nice journey with her and Faelin. Faelin was chosen by Grandfather Shadow to help guide and direct Julianna since he is a true believer in Grandfather Shadow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the typical fantasy book.
Usually, stories have very clear cut "good guys" vs. "bad guys". This story, however, is not that at all. I'm not sure which character to trust. Read more

More About the Author

M Todd Gallowglas is a professional storyteller (like on a stage with a show in front of real people) and the bestselling author of the Tears of Rage and Halloween Jack series.

As a child, Todd wished that he could be a left-handed red head, because he thought they were the most special and different people in the world. Because he was a brown-haired righty, life had forced him to create his own path to being special and different by making up stories of fantastical worlds of adventure. He even believed in these worlds so completely, that several of his teachers questioned whether he knew the difference between fantasy and reality. The jury is still out.

He wrote his first fantasy story for a creative writing assignment in the third grade. Ever since, he's loved spinning tales that take the reader off to the far future or away mystical worlds. High school was a convenient quiet place to hone the craft of writing adventure stories...while he should have been paying attention in class. Todd received a BA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Throughout his time in at SFSU, several teachers tried to steer him away from writing that nasty "genre" stuff. However, they underestimated just how much Todd's brain is hard-wired for telling tales of the magical and fantastic, and their efforts to turn him to literary fiction came to nothing.

After graduating, Todd returned to his career as professional storyteller at Renaissance faires and Celtic festivals. His first professional sale was to Fantasy Flight Games, and he has a run of stories for their Call of Chthulu game line. His story "The Half-Faced Man" received an honorable mention from the Writers of the Future contest. Embracing the paradigm changes sweeping through the publishing industry, M Todd Gallowglas used his storytelling show as a platform to launch his self-published writing career. Nearly all of his eBooks have been Amazon bestsellers, and First Chosen spent most of 2012 on Amazon's Dark Fantasy and Fantasy Series lists.

He currently lives with his wife, three children, more pets than they need, and enough imaginary friends to provide playmates for several crowded kindergarten classes. He is currently corrupting his children by raising them with a rich education of geek culture. And still, as busy as he is, he manages to squeeze in time for some old-school table top gaming and airsoft battles on the weekends (because it's not as messy as paintball). Shiny!
