Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

From the first family of gospel comes siblings BeBe and CeCe Winans's First Christmas, recorded in 1993. Slightly dated by a heavy use of synthesizer and the squeaky-slick production prominent in popular gospel and R&B of the late '80s and early '90s, First Christmas is nevertheless right on time in its joyful celebration of the season. Newly arranged versions of classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," Handel's "Joy to the World," and "For Unto Us (A Child Is Born)" cozy in with originals "Give Me a Star," "I Love You," and "Just Because." "The First Noel," a well-loved public-domain traditional, begins with a beautifully understated string arrangement. The album's finest moment is S. Vincent's "Ooh Child"; aurally pleasing and emotionally moving, Mom and Pop Winans, both of whom sing like angels, take on lead vocal duty, backed and supported by their gifted children. It's all about family here, and the more the merrier. --Paige La Grone

5.0 out of 5 stars A very nice Christmas CD to listen to., August 21, 1999

The First Christmas CD by BeBe and CeCe Winans can be described in one word...sweet. For those who love the sounds of this brother and sister duo, you will surely love this CD. From the upbeat "Jingle Bells" to the slow "Ooh Child". It has that Christmas spirit with that BeBe and CeCe Winans touch. I gave this CD 5 stars.

BeBe and CeCe are great for mixing the word with the secular and my husband truly enjoys this album and he isn't a church goer. This is a man who could do without most Christmas music, but can not go without this CD during the season. Great takes on secular classics like Jingle Bells and wonderful songs about the real meaning of the season like Give Me a Star. I am not a big gospel fan, but I like this album too. I can go the whole holiday season with this CD, Luther's "This Christmas" and Alexander O'Neal "My Gift to You"!
