The First Christmas, It's The Best,
By Pam (Washington State, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: First Christmas (Audio CD)
This is one of the Best Christmas Cd's I have ever heard. Sailing Home For Christmas is such an emotional song, especially in light of Sept. 11th, 2001 but more so for those of us who have son's and daughter's in todays military.I first heard this song in Nov. 2000 after my son left for his first Deployment to the Persian Gulf. Again I find myself in the same position but with much deeper meaning.

This CD has songs that touch the heart and makes you really relate to what Christmas is all about from MANY sides or point of views. From the hurt of being alone at holidays, to being in love, being a kid, being an adult, being at war, and what the REAL reason of christmas is.. The First Christmas Song!! I have played this over 200 times..and its a joy each time!! I love this CD!!

Original Christmas love songs,

Doug chose the brave route in deciding to record an album of entirely original Christmas songs (no sad songs and almost all ballads), totally avoiding the tried and trusted classics. This made the album an essential purchase for me because, even in 1992, I had lots of Christmas albums and generally give preference to original material although there are some singers I'll buy anyway, money permitting. Yet, without any familiar songs, a lot of people will ignore this album, which is a pity.In the years since the album was released, one song (Just put a ribbon in your hair - my favorite song here) has generated three covers that I know of, these being by Alan Jackson (not on one of his own albums but on A very special acoustic Christmas), Eddy Arnold and Riders in the sky. To my knowledge, none of the other songs have been covered at all. Two mid-tempo songs (All I want for Christmas is you, Santa's flying a 747 tonight) provide a nice contrast with the ballads, which include Just put a ribbon in your hair (a lovely song about not needing a Christmas present), Three little pennies (about a child learning to give what little he has) and Sailing home for Christmas (about servicemen coming home). If you enjoy romantic ballads (there are no sad songs here), country style, and are able to play such music around Christmas time, you will surely enjoy this. It's a very relaxing album. |
