We all know the classic Christmas story "Twas the Night Before Christmas", many of us can even recite many lines from memory, but does everyone know the true meaning of Christmas. Keith Christopher uses that classic children's story as a model to tell the about the birth of Jesus Christ who is the reason for the season. Christine Kornacki brings his story to life with her beautiful illustrations. The combination of the illustrations and story this book packs a ton in to its 32 pages.

I just loved this book in so many ways. The illustrations are exceptional, there is no doubt that the illustrator is talented. I found reading this book aloud to be effortless with the flow and rhyme of the story. I really enjoyed that at the end of the book the author adds the excerpts from the gospel of Luke and Matthew. What a great way to redirect the story back to the actual Bible. This book will find a permanent home and I look forward to sharing it with my daughter year after year.

I recommend this book to all parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers and more. This would make a great bedtime story as well as using it a class setting. It is so beautiful that it would also make a great decoration or coffee table book for even those with out children in their home. Honestly you really can't go wrong adding this book to your collection.

* I received this book through the publisher for the purpose of this review, my honest opinion was all that was requested. Thank you Ideals Books.

This isn't just another one of those boring Christmas stories. The writing and illustration team on this book really seemed to strengthen each other's contributions to turn out a book that is sure to become a family favorite.

Christian families have so many books to choose from when it comes time to share the story of the first Christmas with the youngest members of the family. For those looking to add one more picture book about the real meaning of Christmas to their personal library, "The First Christmas Night" by Keith Christopher and Christine Kornacki is an excellent choice.

It's Christmas time and nothing makes more sense than reading about the reason for the season.

This version of the Nativity is set to the song the Night Before Christmas. Instead of the "Night before Christmas and all through the house / Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" we get "Twas the very first Christmas, when all through the town / not a creature was stirring, there was not a sound." Normally, I wouldn't go for what some may consider a knock off, but Christopher, the writer, does come up with some endearing - and original - lines that make it worthwhile. Consider, "He had not a crib, but in a manger instead / the tiny new baby lay down his sweat head. Mary looked down at his cute little nose / and silently counted - ten fingers, ten toes." As a father, this resonates.

The illustrations are lush and full of life; vibrant and colorful. I liked that the characters seemed to be a-racial (if I can make up my own words) - the character's seemed to not be any or to be all races. So we don't worry about a blond, blue eyed Jesus here. I also like that one of the Wise Men was black, even though that may not be historically accurate. It is inclusive and I liked it.

Speaking of Wise Men, though, I didn't like that they were in the story. This is the story of Jesus' birth and these guys were definitely not there at the time. What I get is that this story is based more on tradition than the Bible, which I'm not a fan of. I'd have preferred we not propigate the traditional errors but instead correctly tell the story.

Overall, though, this is a very well done, colorful, engaging, and easy to read book about the birth of Christ.

Ideals Books is the publisher of this charming 32 page hardcover book. Perfect for a 4-8 year old due to the rhyming language that helps them develop verbal language skills and learn to read. Not only is this book great for Family Story Time during the holidays, it is a wonderful addition for the libraries for Children's Ministers and Sunday school teachers! Musically inclined? Christmas carolers could set it to a tune! I found myself humming The First Noel as I read.

Very reminiscent of "Twas The Night before Christmas" in style, this has a poetic feel that flows smoothly with a rhythm that is very pleasing. The story is told in a simple style suitable for young children and gives them an overall summary of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. The Biblical story of the First Christmas, as written in Luke 2:1, 4-16, 20 and Matthew 2:1-2, 9b-11 is also included at the end of the book. I loved this added touch! The gorgeous illustrations add a beauty to the book that will delight all. Even those too young to read for themselves will want to look at these. This is sure to be a treasured book in your family and one you will want to enjoy for years to come.
