Book Description

Like his name, Gray is dark and stormy. Dylan, a girl always searching for what's next, seemingly unable to settle down, is the exact opposite: full of light and life. On the outside, they seem like an unlikely couple. But looks can be deceiving and besides, opposites attract.

What starts as friendship, turns into admiration, respect and caring, until finally these two lone souls find they are truly in love with each other.

But staying in love is not as easy as falling in love. If Dylan and Gray want their love to last, they're going to have to work at it. And learn that sometimes love means having to say you're sorry.

This ebook includes a sample chapter of AWAKEN.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"You'll love it if... you're looking for the perfect love story to kick-start your summer reading. It's The Notebook with a slight touch of cynicism and sarcasm."
 -- Seventeen.com

"The novel beautifully evokes both the intense exhilaration of first love (including a first sexual experience), and the piercing understanding that this moment is only the starting point for lives that won't necessarily unfold in the same way or at the same pace for each lover." -- Newsday.com

"Gray and Dylan are compelling characters who will appeal to readers in search of a good love story set on the brink of the post-high-school world."
-- School Library Journal

First Comes Love is told in dual perspectives and Katie Kacvinsky totally pulled it off. Both voices were distinct and I appreciated seeing both sides of the love story, what each was thinking and both perspectives on love, sex, and problems.
I am a sucker for characters and in this character driven story, Ms. Kacvinsky nails them. When I say its a character driven story, that is not dismissing the plot. There is definite emotions, themes and actions that keep the story going.
Dylan is a character to be admired. She has such a free spirit, and she doesn't care what others think. She is always looking for adventure, and she looks at people for what is below the surface.
Gray is reclusive and dark, but we find out that there is a really good reason for it, and I love how Dylan peels back the layers, helps him heal, trust and to really live again.
I really appreciate seeing their relationship bloom. This is not an insta-love book, and their friendship and falling for each other really makes this book special.
I was pleased with the ending, though at one point, I really wasn't sure how she was going to pull it off. But things were tied up neatly, and even though I want more from Dylan and Gray, I liked the way that she left things.
This is such a sweet story tinged with lots of emotion, stuff to laugh at, and a whole new way to look at life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Young Adult Romance April 26, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
At Mesa Community College, Gray notices a strange girl on campus. It was hard not to notice her. She stands out and not in a positive way, more like freakish way. For Dylan, Gray stood out too. On the surface, he looks callused, but Dylan looked at him through a creative lens where there were textures and layers. Her mission? To make a friend and Gray was the one. She doesn't care that he's simply not interested...or is he?

What I loved best about this romance was the depth of the characters. Dylan, a photography student, was a free spirit, not pinned down by rules. She viewed life as an adventure. Gray, the opposite, has had life chew him up and spit him out. There's a reason he's so closed off from people. By the time Dylan gets through, he won't be the same person. Problem is when summer is over, Dylan, the free spirit, plans another adventure. Where does that leave Gray and Dylan?

On the flip-side, I had issues with Gray's treatment of Dylan or her reaction to it. The character admitted he wasn't nice, but I found him verbally abusive. Although I didn't want to stop reading, I did want to reach through the pages and slap the boy.

Another than a slight sluggish spot or two about a quarter way in, this was a well-rounded romance story. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Opposites Attract. October 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Many love stories are about opposites attracting each other, "Love Story", "Pretty in Pink", "Jane Eyre", "Stargirl", etc, etc. This story is no different, a story of a quirky and outgoing and carefree young woman who attracts the attention of a shy and introverted young man who has been scarred by life. Becoming friends, somewhat forcibly for Gray at first (well, seemingly, but not really), when Dylan notices him watching her as she photographs insects on a sidewalk...

The story which unfolds is about what happens when two people completely different form a relationship together, the good and the bad. I see complaints about Gray being verbally abusive, but I can say in all honesty, I could parallel myself to Gray in that department, for similar reasons, I was severely scarred by life. Now, I have come out of that and I don't feel the need to say harsh things anymore, but often times, when we experience things that change us in a negative way, it makes us do things we don't want to, and I feel this book portrayed that in a very accurate way.

I enjoyed watching their relationship unfold, and was sad to see the book end, I love a good romantic read, and this book was a nice change of pace from some of the romance books I have read in the past, highly recommended. :)

God Bless ~Amy
