A singularly valuable tool for professionals, clergy, and religious educators,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: First Corinthians (Sacra Pagina (Quality Paper)) (Paperback)
Written by biblical scholar Raymond F. Collins and edited by Daniel J. Harrington S.J., First Corinthians is seventh in the Sacra Pagina series of fresh translations and modern expositions of the books of the New Testament. In addition to the translated text itself, First Corinthians is packed cover to cover with methodological perspectives, background information, interpretations, sources for reference and further study, and much more. Written for intermediate to advanced bible studies students, and a singularly valuable tool for professionals, clergy, and religious educators, First Corinthians is as highly recommended for its depth and exacting scrutiny of source material as the rest of the Sacra Pagina series.

A solid commentary,

I am a Christian, who is at Bible College and not from the Catholic persuasion. But, I must say I loved this commentary. Although I may have disagreed with a few of his views in various places (eg communion) I thought his exegesis elsewhere was outstanding! He does a stellar job on chapter 1, 7, 10 and 11-13 (all of which I spent most of my time within this module). I definitely recommend any student in looking up this commentary along with Garland, Fee, Witherington III and Thistelton.

A good commentary but Fitzmyer`s is better,

Raymond E. Brown called Joseph Fitzmyer "the best learned catholic biblical scholar". I read Collin`s commentary on the Eucharist. Well, Fitzmyer`s treatment will please much more the catholic reader and for exegetical reasons. Yes Raymond Collins has done a fine job and if you buy this commentary you`ll be happy, but if you want the best, go for Fitzmyer`s.
