From the Back Cover

The apostle Paul's first letter to the Corinthians is one of the amazing jewels of the New Testament. Paul wrote to real believers who were struggling to live their Christian lives during degenerate times in a world that is very similar to ours. We can learn valuable lessons from God's instructions to the Corinthians.

Bible study is such an important activity because the obedient Christian life depends on an accurate understanding of the written Word of God. Scripture was not written in a secret code, but it does require patient effort and study to dig out its treasures. This Bible Study Companion provides guidance for understanding the biblical languages as well as the background history, culture, geography, and meaning of this important book.

The study of First Corinthians Verse-by-Verse provides answers to questions like these:
  • How can Christians live godly lives in an ungodly world?
  • What is the best way for believers to win their battle against the flesh?
  • How can the church keep worldliness from damaging or destroying its influence?
  • Why is doctrine important to the Christian life, and what are the consequences of believing something that is not true?
  • How are believers supposed to act in the meetings of the local church?
  • How can Christians at different levels of maturity live in harmony and maintain the unity of the faith?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Anthony Garland on November 1, 2012
Format: Paperback
Steve Lewis has written a very helpful commentary on this important Biblical book written by Paul to an infant church of immature faith. Steve takes apart each verse and examines both the context and the Greek words, where appropriate, to help clarify what Paul is saying. This is especially helpful in several key passages where the context of what was probably going on at Corinth is critical to understanding Paul's instructions (e.g., 1Cor. 14). Many unhelpful conclusions have been reached by interpreters who neglect the context and Steve's commentary serves to correct this trend.

The commentary contains numerous helpful charts and diagrams (e.g., "Timeline of Biblical Revelation" on page 272) and is characterized by typographical excellence. (This reader was unable to find a single grammatical or punctuation error in the entire read! That is saying something nowadays when many texts are rushed into publication before careful review.)

The author's approach to the task is characterized by a sound conservative approach while exhibiting a warm pastoral concern. The desire that the reader be able to understand and successfully apply the teaching of 1st Corinthians to one's own Christian walk is evident throughout the work.

Highly recommended!
