Book Description

April 5, 2001 0534385176 978-0534385170 3
This third edition provides a simple, basic approach to the finite element method that can be understood by both undergraduate and graduate students. It does not have the usual prerequisites (such as structural analysis) required by most available texts in this area. The book is written primarily as a basic learning tool for the undergraduate student in civil and mechanical engineering whose main interest is in stress analysis and heat transfer. The text is geared toward those who want to apply the finite element method as a tool to solve practical physical problems.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Logan does a very good job of keeping things simple and straight forward. Fairly well written using a simple approach without extensive theoretical and mathematical theory. The text is very complete."

"Logan has a very easy-to-read style, while retaining the precision and clarity of engineering topics without being dry."

"The author presented topics in a simple and easy-to-follow way and provided subsequently proper derivation or illustration to enhance students' understanding. I cannot find a textbook which is better than this one in the field of finite element method." --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first course in FEM, October 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A First Course in the Finite Element Method (Hardcover)
This book may be the best text book I have come across in years.
If you have the basis of engineering (or physics or maths) you barely need an instructor.
The explainations are clear, and I haven't found any mistakes yet (if there are mistakes they will be few).
Lots of nice problems with answers provided.

This book is excellent for whom desires to learn on which basis FEMs work (undergraduate and graduate).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Text, August 24, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A very good book for someone that has never studied this subject before. It's clearly written, and has very good practical examples. I was able to easily work the problems in the end of the chapters using the equations and examples in the text. To use this book, you need to have elementary knowledge of mechanics of materials, basic structural design, and matrices. There is a very good appendix on matrices, which helps you work through that part of FEM.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finite Element Text, September 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A First Course in the Finite Element Method (Hardcover)
It is the only finite element text that I have, it was required for my current course. It seems to do pretty well with example problems and other material. Tends to skip steps as do most higher learning textbooks, so be sure to brush up on your calculus knowledge.
