4.0 out of 5 stars (3.5 Stars) The Sweeter the Berry!!
Laila Stewart is a free spirited individual who loves life. She left the confines of corporate America to become a freelance copy writer. She is unconventional in every way imaginable, including living on a houseboat. Then there is Hudson Godfry. He is an attorney by trade, but him and his partner have set out to become owners of a black owned winery in Washington State...

3.0 out of 5 stars Love Yourself First
This was another story of woman chasing man, man playing mind games. I really liked Layla but felt she was doomed from the first when she made the decision to house trade to get closer to Hudson without letting him know first. I felt she was chasing Hudson too hard, especially when he was giving her mixed signals on their last encounter. Of course he wasn't turning down...

This review is from: First Crush (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Laila Stewart is a free spirited individual who loves life. She left the confines of corporate America to become a freelance copy writer. She is unconventional in every way imaginable, including living on a houseboat. Then there is Hudson Godfry. He is an attorney by trade, but him and his partner have set out to become owners of a black owned winery in Washington State. All of his money and time are focused on the winery. So he has to break things off with Laila, even though she is the best thing that has ever happened to him, until he can give her everything she deserves. When Laila house swaps and moves to Washington, will Hudson have room in his life for Laila or will he allow her to walk away?

First Crush has a very unique story line. The two main characters both have careers that are not your typical everyday jobs. It makes the story very interesting. Along with the romance element, you learn something that the average person doesn't know too much about. The storyline does lag at certain times, and it seems to be a little disconnected at other times. Gamble makes up for that by making the main characters very realistic. The main male character will remind you of at least one male you know. The loving, good brother is there somewhere; he is just buried underneath several insecurities. The female character is there for him, trying to keep the relationship together. Sound familiar?

I really liked Layla but felt she was doomed from the first when she made the decision to house trade to get closer to Hudson without letting him know first. I felt she was chasing Hudson too hard, especially when he was giving her mixed signals on their last encounter. Of course he wasn't turning down her advances but he really treated her like a distant stranger all the time. This was a well written story, I just wanted the female character to have a little more back bone and self worth.

2.0 out of 5 stars Laila was a doormat, very unbecoming!, December 28, 2008
This review is from: First Crush (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Laila has been dating Hudson long-distance for about a year. He wants to break up with her because his new winery is keeping him busy. Since he is a coward he waits and waits to break up with her. Laila has a feeling something is not right with their relationship and she decides to temporarily move to another state to be with him. Upon seeing her he immediately breaks up with her. But she agrees to work for his company anyway - dumb. He casts her aside at will, only to have for faithfully wait for his next order. This story just didn't make any sense. He broke up with her, but she never broke up with him. Not one time in this story did Laila stick up for herself. If he wanted her to answer phones, she did. If he wanted her to host a party, she did. If he wanted to sleep with her, she did. I needed a little bit more backbone from the main character. Basically, this book did not live up to the description on the back. And what was the purpose of her blog, to show us how pathetic she was? Who would share that much of their personal life on the internet
