Book Description

July 1, 1997
First Degree Burn is the first novel in a series from the Berkley Publishing Group featuring FDNY Fire Marshal Eddie Burke.

It begins when Eddie, a decorated ex-firefighter turned arson investigator, hunts a serial arsonist nicknamed Superman. Born Dagoberto Rojas, Superman is a Dominican psychopath hired by New York slumlords to burn out their rent-controlled buildings. In a spectacular opening sequence, he destroys a historic Lower East Side row house and escapes, leaving an infant dead and Eddie Burke addicted to Percodan.

When a lost WPA mural is discovered after decades, a young art restorer is murdered. It seems that the mural contains a dark secret that somebody's willing to kill for. Eddie, who has a chip on his shoulder the size of a Buick, calls on Columbia art professor Dr. Caroline Drexel to help break the case. But Dr. Drexel, a beautiful heiress, is tormented by her own inner demons. Reluctantly, Burke also seeks out the help of his father, Big Eddie, a legendary ex-NYPD Chief of Detectives from whom he's been estranged for years.

Eddie had started out as a cop. Number One in his class at the Police Academy, when he intentionally washed out and joined the FDNY. The rivalry between the Reds & Blues in New York is historic and Big Eddie seems to hate his son for the betrayal.

As the mystery over the fire-ravished mural twists and turns, more people are killed. Father and son are both drawn to the gorgeous art professor and we discover that Eddie has never forgiven his father for an infidelity committed the night that his mother (Big Eddie's wife) had a stroke. Though he's a great detective, the old man's weakness has always been women and he comes to physical blows with Eddie who suspects that the older, still virile cop, has designs on Caroline.

When they finally reconcile, Big Eddie confesses that he's always loved his son. But before they can break the case, Big Eddie is gunned down by the murderer who burned the mural. This sets Eddie off on a ticking-clock race to the finish as he faces the killer in an abandoned subway station.

When the novel ends, Eddie Burke has been promoted to Lieutenant in charge of The Bureau of Fire Investigation's Manhattan Base. Now redeemed and purged of his own family demons, Eddie takes his father's place in the top echelons of New York law enforcement. A veteran firefighter and son of a legendary cop, working cases for the FDNY. He's stronger, smarter and more polished now. But in the night, Eddie Burke is still haunted by the elusive serial arsonist they call Superman...

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you like the Mac Fontana firefighter books by Earl W. Emerson (The Dead Horse Paint Company), you'll also enjoy this thriller from TV journalist Peter Lance, who has obviously been to a lot of fires. His protagonist, New York City fire marshal Eddie Burke Jr., son of a hero cop, is trying to get out from under his father's shadow. In First Degree Burn his path to the truth about an art restorer's death takes him through every layer of the city's social structure.

From Scientific American

First Degree Burn sets a new standard for mystery fiction. Arson cop Eddie Burke is a different kind of detective for a different kind of crime. He comes at you like Popeye Doyle in The French Connection.

Lance captures the drama and the history of NY and the heros of the city as true to life as I have ever read. The book is one of the hardest books to put down. His writing and storytelling of arson is first rate. I strongly recommend this book and the read you will experience with it. I hope it is someday turned into a movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, June 6, 2000

"I was in L.A. last week and tried to post this review, but it never showed up. I am a native of Oklahoma and a Navyveteran. I now live in Newport, R.I. where I run a bed & breakfast inn and charter boat service. I don't have time to read many novels, but I recently found FIRST DEGREE BURN, which one of the guests had left. I have to say that it was a total page turner. One of the best novels I've read in years. I looked at your reviews and noted that most of the people have given it five stars, except for the last two. Oscar Davis and Mark Pierce. Are these guys for real? FIRST DEGREE BURN is outstanding. I learned so much from it about fire investigation and WPA art. The characters are great. I went to the author's website...and noticed that the book had received a starred review in Publisher's Weekly. What do they know that Davis and Pierce don't? All I can say is that I am a real person and I loved this book. I can't wait for the next Eddie Burke mystery. Feel free to contact me at tyler@edgenet.net"

5.0 out of 5 stars First Degree Burn, June 28, 2000

Loved that Eddie Burke Jr! I couldn't put the book down, and found myself at the last page 36 hours later. The story is intelligent with a huge amount of integrity. I found the characters to be fresh and crisp. Writer Peter Lance carefully leads you down each path with Eddie Burke, sometimes with such colorful detail that you can actually feel the heat of the fire. My only disappointment is that there isn't a sequel yet. Come on Mr Lance, what the heck are you waiting for? This book is a GREAT ride!
