4.0 out of 5 stars Quick & Dirty Review for ABEM recert exam
For emergency physicians who desire a single, quick review for the ABEM board certification exam. 930 pages of text - which take approximately 20 to 30 hours to review.

Extremely terse, well organized and easy to digest. A clinical vignette Q&A begins most sections. Decent images / radiographs. High yield pearls are highlighted in the margins...

3.0 out of 5 stars ok review
This review book was ok for reviewing some of the basics of the boards quickly and probably has most of what you need for the written boards.

However, there are quite a few tables missing information from the Kindle version that I bought to read on my ipod touch such as toxicology tables. Given the price charged for the e-version, this is not acceptable...

For emergency physicians who desire a single, quick review for the ABEM board certification exam. 930 pages of text - which take approximately 20 to 30 hours to review.

Extremely terse, well organized and easy to digest. A clinical vignette Q&A begins most sections. Decent images / radiographs. High yield pearls are highlighted in the margins. Surprisingly up to date - the classic answers are provided with newer evidence-based info in parenthesis.

Not for those who require a more in depth review, but for practicing EPs who only need a brush up on Leptospirosis, Foxglove, and the like, First Aid for the EM Boards is a reasonable approach.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok review, October 6, 2010

This review book was ok for reviewing some of the basics of the boards quickly and probably has most of what you need for the written boards.

However, there are quite a few tables missing information from the Kindle version that I bought to read on my ipod touch such as toxicology tables. Given the price charged for the e-version, this is not acceptable. Unless it is fixed, would not recommend buying the electronic version.

2.0 out of 5 stars Serious problems with ebook, February 14, 2011

I use the downloadable Kindle program for PCs. I bought the Kindle version of the book because I've used other First Aid books and found them very useful. The Kindle version of the EM Board Review, however, has too many mistakes in it. Several symbols are replaced with blank squares so that you have to use another source to determine what symbol is missing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors and typos, November 16, 2010

Although most of the content of this book is useful as a review for the ABEM exam, there are literally hundreds of mistakes and typos that it becomes a distraction. I started keeping track of them on an index card, and without really trying filled up about a dozen cards. While many of the mistakes are simply typos, others are critically important (i.e. they got the formula for pediatric ET tubes wrong). There are numerous topics omitted in the index, and many of the pages listed in the index were wrong.

Hopefully, this book will be revised and edited: it will then be much more useful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eh...not great, September 18, 2009

The other reviewer who mentioned this book simply regurgitating all of the common things you have already read about common emergency medicine problems was correct. It seems to rely more on "what everyone says" rather than pulling in any of the latest literature. This would perhaps be a good book for a medical student doing an emergency medicine clerkship as a quick reference about various topics. As an emergency medicine resident I find it too elementary, and reading the sections leaves me wanting more information even though I understand this is by its nature supposed to be a review book. I find that I rarely pull this off the shelf.

This book is ok. At 900 pages, it is too big and superficial to fit any niche on the bookshelf for really useful books. I've gone back to reading the new Rosen's, EB Medicine articles and lots of practice questions. After finding some mistakes and important topics covered too lightly, it hasn't left my bottom shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars agree with above review, but EM board book for residents, not step 3, June 23, 2009

Great review book for boards, almost 1000 pages, probably too much for Step 3. Just bought book 1 month ago and it covers all the bases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review in both content and superb organization, June 18, 2009
This review is from: First Aid for the Emergency Medicine Boards (FIRST AID Specialty Boards) (Paperback)
I incidentally found this book while studying for the USMLE Step 3 and I Am very pleased. It is not only for EM board but it hits majority of the medical and surgical topics including superb toxicology as well as dermatology.

The content is very easy to follow stream line, concise and memory gripping. I have been able to read about one hundred disease in a few hours sitting at the book store.

I love the way it eliminate excessive details but still able to high lights not only the diagnosis and treatments but key concept, very brief yet insightfu epidemiology, and complications.

The organization is superb and its 900 plus pages are a pack of dynamic managements insights that read very pleasantly and rapidly.

Only hindering fact is the high price but am going to buy it tomorrow...

I have gone thought most of the other step 3 books but this book really stands out

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the level, August 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: First Aid for the Emergency Medicine Boards (FIRST AID Specialty Boards) (Paperback)
I was super excited to get this book i even got it as a preorder
the book is fairly huge = almost 1000 pages , n of the biggest First aids in my library, however; the content is not high yield at all, just regurgitation of what you find on First Aid for Internal Med boards with snap shots from other first aids making a huge but useless ER Review

What is unique about the First Aid series is or I'd better say WAS concise rapid review with HY tips, now this is lost in their renewed editions.

for this book:
the content is fair with only the cardiovascular, environmental chapters and the legal issues chapter being above average
OBGYN ER, Pedia, Trauma and infectious = Below average , seriously

Overall acceptable but would not recommend it, since its a crossover between review and concise text but lacking the in depth of a text :)
