Book Description

First Feature is a bitingly wry detective whodunit featuring ex-LAPD's not so celebrated detective Anthony Carrick as he juggles mafia lords, drug addled neophytes, nymphomaniacs, gay counterculture, vegan hippies and tinsel town's dark side in a quest to uncover a homicide in the midst of his own personal turmoil.

Like Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and other hard boiled detectives before him, Anthony Carrick uses his guts, charm and humor to solve murders and deal with the other sordid details of people's lives.

Why was one of Hollywood's premier producers bludgeoned to death with his own Oscar? Amongst a dozen suspicious culprits, can Anthony solve this murder and keep Hollywood's seediness out of the tabloids before LAPD Homicide solves it for him.

Employed by one of the biggest movie production companies in Hollywood, Anthony is working against time. Tinsel Town's image must stay pure. But can he solve the murder before the tabloids publish the immoral truth of Hollywood's darker side? Find out in First Feature. The first of the Anthony Carrick mysteries.

About the Author

Growing up in South Africa inspired Jason Blacker's desire for justice and he soon found an outlet for this quest through his writing, both literary fiction but especially hard-boiled detective fiction. He fell in love with the hard-boiled genre years ago and his hard-boiled detective Anthony Carrick is formed from his love for Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade and Mike Hammer amongst others. Jason Blacker has worked as a school bus driver, privacy analyst, coffee store manager and a cop. He's not as brave as Anthony Carrick nor as outspoken, but he enjoys bad guys getting their karmic debt in spades! Jason Blacker also plays squash, enjoys running and working out and writing poetry. When not writing, those spare few minutes each day, he likes to hang out with his wife and son and the 4 cats that moved in not long ago. He also likes candlelit dinners and walks on the beach... ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great light read, but needs an editor January 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great read for the airplane - light and quick to follow. The story is somewhat predictable and I was somewhat unhappy how the ending turned out. I expected a bit more.
At first I found the incomplete sentences and "bad" grammar a distraction. However, it sort of fits the character and I began to imagine that would be how he thinks and talks. However, the editor has run this through the spell check without reading it and there are numerous instances where the wrong word appears, such as "form" rather than "from". This can be a real distraction and would have been an easy fix, even if the grammar were not corrected.
Priced low, so I can't complain. I will watch to see when his next book is released.

2.0 out of 5 stars Offensive May 14, 2012

The story line and characters were interesting. Unfortunately, the author found it expedient to use the name of Jesus as a swear word again, and again, ad infinitum. After reading about a third of the book, I really didn't care "who done it" and deleted it from my Kindle.

More About the Author

Jason Blacker was born in Cape Town but spent most of his first 18 years in Johannesburg. His thirst for justice and peace for all humanity was formed in the African sun. He writes mystery fiction and literary fiction as well as poetry and daily haikus at his haiku blog.

When not writing he is either spending time with his wife and son or herding the 4 cats that rule the roost. Other than that, he enjoys squash, both the game and the vegetable and running. A healthy body allows for a healthy mind and a fertile creative soil from which the writing springs.
