Loved this book! I stayed up all night and finished it. I could not put it down. Rue is such an interesting woman and her writing style is such that you feel you are chatting with a friend. A very honest friend who loves men! Rue has led such an incredible life - I am glad she chose to share it with us.

I love "The Golden Girls" and couldn't wait to read Rue McClanahan's autobiography. She writes in a manically bubbly style, gushing over the highs and lows of a long show-biz career and a love-life so hot it would make even Blanche Devereaux blush.Eddie Rue McClanahan was born into a conservative Oklahoma family during the Depression, and from an early age wanted desperately to be popular. Popular, to Rue, meant being loved and adored by men, and she was always falling in love too easily. She was a struggling stage actress with two quick marriages and divorces under her belt when she met Norman Lear who began casting her in TV sitcoms. Two more divorces later, she landed the role of the man-hungry Blanche. Breast cancer and husband number 5 bring her story up to date. I was fascinated with Rue's unfailing optimism, her gritty determination to succeed as an actress, and her abysmally poor decisions when it came to men. Now in her seventies, Rue is still the belle of the ball. She names names and doesn't pull any punches in this book; Rue's fans won't be able to put it down.

Millions of fans remember Rue McClanahan as the ever-confident, man-loving Blanche Devereaux in the very popular sitcom, "The Golden Girls". In this book, she tells about her life and how she came to be Blanche, after many years of financial and romantic struggles. She seems to have a lot in common with her favorite character except, as she says, she's "not from Atlanta". She is, in fact, from Oklahoma and she couldn't wait to leave the central plains for California and New York so that she could pursue her acting career. She is very candid about her life and doesn't hesitate to point out the many mistakes she has made in her life and her career. This book, like it's author, is very entertaining.

Life According to Rue,
By Antoine D. Reid "80sforever" (Durham, NC United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: My First Five Husbands..And the Ones Who Got Away (Hardcover)
Rue McClanahan's autobiography "My First Five Husbands ... And the Ones Who Got Away" offers fans of 'The Golden Girls' star a chance to get to know the woman behind Blanch Devareaux. What you're served is a life story that seems (perhaps shockingly enough) very Blanche-like; mistakes made in love, "many, many men", family woes and career ups and downs. The final verdict? Not bad at all.I found it hard to get into McClanahan's book at first. Her style is very light as noted by many and conversational. One hang-up I have over the book is that early on she states that she isn't going into great depth about some things in her life, she's going to stretch to the truth about some and simply tamper with how some events really occured for the sake of telling the story of her life. So, that proclomation left me wondering how much of this was really an autobiography and how much of it was a work of fiction meant to play on the rift of the character that really made her a big star in Hollywood? With the questions arising throughout the book, it still was a good read. She focuses a lot more on her early life, pre-'Golden Girls' so really, we get to know the Rue McClanahan that came before the fame. The theatre years are interesting, but some of it seems to blend together into one big lump, though once she reaches her years on 'Maude', things really pick up. It was interesting to see her flesh out her relationship with Bea Arthur, but I wondered why she chose not to mention much about her encounters and working with Betty White during 'Mama's Family' at the same time. She chooses, nobly so, not to dig up any drama or trash her co-stars in 'The Golden Girls' and speeds through the post-'Golde Girls' years which left me wanting her to focus more on what she got into, her feelings about getting older, how her career has changed. In all, it's a book that will probably satisfy any curious person. It's amusing, it's not really all that scandalous or anything, but it makes you appreciate the actor that Rue is, espesically after reading about her struggles with her son, finding love and then making it as an actress. Recommended for all that are interested but be warned that if you're looking to learn something about 'The Golden Girls' or expect secrets, rivalry, scandal from those years to emerge here, you best look for another source because this isn't the book for that.

This book is great! I've always been a big Golden Girls fan and this book made me into a huge Rue McClanahan fan. I enjoyed reading this book so much that I ended up reading as slow as possible because I didn't want it to be over! This book offers an amazing look into an actress and her similarities and differences to her lovable character. This book will definitely bring a smile to your face and a warmth to your heart.
