In December of 1907 the US sent a fleet of sixteen battleships around the world to show the flag. Not nearly so well known was the flight around the world made by tha Army Air Service in 1924. Starting with four aircraft, specially built Douglas World Cruisers (DWC), two actually finished the trip, flying 26,445 miles in a flying time of 360 hours.
This book is a story of that trip. It begins with a chapter on the concept of the trip and the construction of the airplanes. The pictures in the Douglas factory showing women sewing the fabric onto the wings is a scene so different from today's world that it is unbelievable. Then when you think about it, 1924 was closer to the Civil War than it is to 2005. Most of the book is on the trip itself. It is profusely illustrated, showing the aircraft in Canada, Alaska, Japan all the way to Greenland and back to America. It's a fascinating book showing what was done with wood, fabric and very stong men. |
