Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A teddy bear grows to life size to accompany his boy on his first airplane trip; PW praised the "beautifully rendered illustrations," and said, "McPhail knows how to take the fear out of new experiences." Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 An informative and amusing book on a child's first flight alone, but one that experiences some technical difficulties. A young boy describes, in one line per page, what happens as he boards the plane, flies off to visit his grandmother, and lands. While boarding, his bear comes to life and provides company as his lifesize seatmate. Children will chuckle at the bear's hilarious antics and expressions as he struggles with his seat belt, weeps during a sad movie, and misbehaves, and they will learn what happens during a flight. However the book lacks the reassurance that it attempts to provide. Few responsible parents would drop a child off at the airport, leaving him to get his ticket, find his gate, and go through security unattended. And unlike this young traveler, children are usually boarded firstnot in the crush of a mob. The illustrations, competent and colorful as they may be, are also inconsistent. Before takeoff, the boy puts his suitcase in the overhead compartmentupon landing, he must stand on the bear's back and still can barely reach it. A great idea, but one that is less than perfectly executed. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal''
