This review is from: First Flight: Yusef Lateef with Donald Byrd (Audio CD)
Live from Detroit 1955- Donald with Yusef Lateef tenor sax, Bernard McKinney euphonium and a rhythm section led by Barry Harris. This has suprisingly good sound quality, much better than Don at the Au Chat qui Peche which is disgraceful at times. This is brassy Byrd near his best but he's just getting started. McKinney's euphonium sounds like a mellow trombone and does not disappoint. The first track is actually The Blues Walk from the Brown/Roach book.--54 min.----A couple of months later Don showed up in NYC as a member of the George Wallington quintet and recorded LIVE! AT THE CAFE BOHEMIA,with Jackie McLean.
