Editorial Reviews

Titled after the original six-track EP, and containing that in its entirety, this collection makes the band's earliest work up through the Propaganda 1984 Mixes EP available on one disc. In terms of sheer convenience, it's a godsend for any enthusiastic fan wanting to check out Play Dead, while the remastering sounds great and the discography, if stripped down to simple release and technical information, is still useful. Those with no patience to extreme, theatrical singing, screaming, artsy guitar riffs, and everything that seemed to make up the Positive Punk/goth scene as stereotyped in the early '80s will want to avoid this like the plague. However, those willing to take a chance on it might find themselves rewarded -- keep an eye out for it. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars gone, but not forgotten, November 29, 1999

always considered to be firmly in the minor leagues Play dead , for me were a rare jewel in the otherwise murky world of goth. This compilation is an excellent intro to the band and recants a very productive period in the bands development,For their finest work check out "company of justice" their final lp/cd , which is without doubt a monumental collection of classic goth. For those interested the band have an excellent web page , that fills in the gaps on a band who never really gained the acclaim that they so surely deserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars missing half, April 14, 2002

i have the vinyl, and tracks 9-16 don't appear (because they're remixes perhaps?) if the second half is as good as the first 8 songs this is a must have for playdeadfans. though very underrated-play dead put out some extremly catching music that the mainstream of the 80's wasn't obviously ready for.
defiently ahead of their time

5.0 out of 5 stars Goth Pioneers Do Not Disappoint, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: First Flower (Audio CD)
The complete studio recorded catalog from 1982-1983. You'll recall that the Sisters were at or about this level of production. Solid rhythms, driving bass lines, and vocals that range from triumphant to helpless. Nice for the collector who can't find the vinyl. Includes an address in the liner notes that is absolutely worthless.
