Book Description

I am Gwen Frost, and I have a Gypsy gift. It’s called psychometry – that’s a fancy way of saying that I see images in my head and get flashes of other people’s memories off almost everything I touch, even guys.

My gift makes me kind of nosy. Okay, okay, maybe a lot nosy—to the point of obsession sometimes. I want to know everything about everyone around me. But even I don’t want to know the secrets my friend Paige is hiding or the terrible loss that will send me to a new school – Mythos Academy, where the teachers aren’t preparing us for the SATs, but to battle Reapers of Chaos. Now I have no friends and no idea how my gift fits in with all these warrior whiz kids. The only thing I do know is that my life is never, ever going to be the same...

Touch of Frost is an intriguing start to an exciting new series!”

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a book July 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not even a short story, it is simply a few page long introduction to a book. Well written, as you would expect from Esteps, but not so much as a complete short story. Not worth $0.99, I was very disappointed. I don't mind paying a fair price for a book, but don't charge me a darn thing for something like this. It is nothing more than an introduction, and doesn't stand on its own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story, sets things up nicely July 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all of Estep's Elemental Assassin series and was excited to hear she was starting the young adult Mythos Academy series. The first full length book in this series is, Touch of Frost, and will be released July 26th. This short story was a good intro to the series and really set things up nicely.

Gwen Frost is a girl with Gypsy magic that goes to a normal high school. When her Gypsy magic inadvertently causes catastrophe to strike her life she finds herself at Mythos Academy; a magical place where people with similar powers attend school.

I should state right away that this is the story of how Gwen ended up going to Mythos Academy. So, basically this whole story is just set up. That being said I enjoyed the set up, I liked Gwen as a character, and I was intrigued by the brief glimpse I did get of Mythos Academy.

You don't see a lot of Mythos Academy and that was kind of disappointing. What I did see of it I liked. It sounds very Harry Potterish or kind of like Camp Half Blood (from Percy and the Olympians) but with a more teen bent to it.

Overall I enjoyed the story. I liked Gwen as a character and liked learning how she got to Mythos academy. I am eager to see more of Mythos Academy and can't wait to read Touch of Frost when it is released. If you are a Jennifer Estep fan and like young adult novels definitely check this out; it is a good intro to the series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Skip it and buy "Touch of Frost" July 31, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Skip this very, very, very short introduction and buy "Touch of Frost". The same introduction is available in the first chapters of the actual book. I wasted $0.99 on this. I know it's only a small amount but I could have had a Sonic drink during happy hour instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Patchy Prelude July 8, 2011
By Kale
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Gwendolyn Frost is your normal average awkward teenager. Resigned to the fringes of the popular factions, being more a sweatshirt and comics than sling backs and coach kind of girl. Maybe her tastes in outside appearance is a nod to her difference. Gwen has a Gypsy gift of psychometry, she is able to touch something enabling her to see glimpses and feel emotions of the people who have come into contact with it.

First Frost is set about six months prior Touch of Frost and, details the events leading up to Gwen's entrance to Mythos Academy. I am a fan of Estep and have been patiently waiting for this series to drop and snatched this up as soon as I came across it. Immediately after finishing First Frost I went on the authors site to see if any chapters of Touch of Frost were posted. The first two chapters are available and were a factor in my assessment of this teaser.

So while I like what I've read so far, in general the concept is really interesting, with a lot of potential. I like the idea of a school for warrior whiz kids. But I was disappointed. First Frost was more of a prologue than a novella. The story wasn't enough for me to think of this as anything more than an introduction. It was insightful and left me wanting more. It didn't cost much, so I don't feel cheated. My real problem is with the inconsistencies between this and the full book. Of course in Touch of Frost the explanations of Gwen's gift and past are included, but she unknowingly caught the vision that starts everything. Though in First Frost she planned it. There were other little things that didn't match. I just find that the lack of consistency turns First Frost into a half-hearted effort.

I am still looking forward to this series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Super short novella August 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
First I want to say that I borrowed this from someone because I would have been mad if I paid .99 for it. I think it took my 10-15 minutes to read. Usually a short prequel like this or a novella should take longer than that. While I have not read any of the other books I wanted to read this first. It does explain some things but not much. It could easily been a chapter in the first book not a stand alone. If you can borrow it don't buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Short, and Too Elementary August 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this because I was interested in the first book that is soon to be released. It sounds interesting and has a lot of the elements I enjoy: magic, mythology incorporation, and boarding schools (blame harry potter). However I was seriously disappointed in this. First off I felt that it should have been longer, it only took 30 minutes max for me to get through this. Somethings were extremely rushed and I still didn't care when it was over. I think this would have been a lot better if it had been fleshed out some more. The writing is...okay at best, there were times when I literally grunted at things that irritated me because it was so frequent. For instances there is a lot of repetition in either wording or phrasing, and after a certain point it becomes very irritating and somewhat elementary. I don't like the main character and none of the conversations felt real, it was almost like watching one of those teenage shows where you can obviously tell it's scripted. It is however an interesting concept that I'm willing to look into when it finally comes out because I do want to know the full premise. I don't think I'll be buying the book when it hits shelves though, I'll probably try to borrow it from the library or a friend.

As far as prequels go this is a short and sweet one, it offers some background on the main character of the series and definitely helps to whet your appetite.
