Beware....,

Ok, I don't know where to start on this album. Well first of all, the origional versions of these songs are much better. This album is supposed to be versions of SSS songs without the producers "cleaning up" the sound to be a little more like pop music. Well I liked this idea, and was looking forward to hearing the songs. To say the least, I was let down. The only thing I liked about these versions was the loud smashing drum machines. Thats it... The rest is repetative nonsense. I am a fan of some other SSS stuff (the 12" collection is ok) but this album is almost useless. You can hardly hear the lyrics, and it sounds like something my little cousin would put togheter on cheap cheesy sound equipment. The songs are harsh and loud (which is good) but have almost no melody or rhythm (which is bad!). Most songs sound exactly the same, and I sometimes get confused on which track I'm listening to unless I can see the lcd display on my CD player. Also, many people may be led to believe that this is a greatest hits collection... It may be a collection of more popular songs, but they sound completely different. I still give this CD 2/5 because at least they are based on songs that are ok, and I always commend origionality... I have spoken with other SSS fans about this album and we all seem to agree that it is really not worth buying. If you want some popular SSS stuff, get the new Flaunt it/Dress for Excess compilation coming out in mid 2000... if your a hardcore fan, still... stay away from this CD!

FALLING from ORBIT,
By Jason "jasons_brain" (Raleigh, NC USA) - See all my reviews

FIRST GENERATION is a collection of early 4-track demos made while the band was still forming.
If you want to hear bad, muffled, monophonic versions of "Love-Missile F-11" or "Sex-Bomb-Boogie," then this CD is for you. But why would you want to? The sound quality is horrible, and it's difficult to figure out how these ugly little songs ever led to a major recording contract. Also included are a handful of 8-track demos recorded in the early 90's. These songs might have been interesting if they weren't so boring. Unless you're a Die-Hard Sputnik Fan, intent on owning EVERYTHING ever recorded by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, this is a worthless CD. By the way, there are about 3 different versions of this CD, often referred to as "1st Edition", "2nd Edition" and "3rd Edition." They are all essentally the same album with different cover art, and each "Generation" has 1 or 2 extra tracks than the version that preceded it. They're all equally boring, though...

New wave genius,

For those looking for original versions of these songs you will be disappointed. What we have here is a drum-laden early 80s synth cornucopia. If you like Suicide, Sparks, etc. you will love this album.
