A Kid's Review
This review is from: The First Horse I See (Paperback)
This book is great!! Willojean, the main character,is a 14-year old girl who's mom died of cancer and her dad is a spy plane designer who is away alot. She lives on her granddad's farm where her best friend Dove keeps her pony Toby. Willo then gets a feisty ex-racehorse named Tess. Tess is very hard to control, so Willo gets help from her trainer Diana,Diana's son Colin,Dove, and her granddad. Will she ever control Tess? Will her alcoholic dad even let her keep Tess that long? Find out in this great book! I loved it so much I even read it to my pony Lucky! I swear he loved it,to!

A book to bring families together,
By Cindy Walsh (dcwalsh@uswest.net) (Boulder, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The First Horse I See (Hardcover)
It was a joy to experience this writing, for it was so much more than just reading a book. Ms. Keehn has allowed the reader to see the special relationships that can develop between horse and human, as well as explain the difficulties between child and parent. As a child and adult equestrian, I can attest to the insight and accuracy Ms. Keehn provides in showing the outlet a horse gives children in dealing with difficult life experiences and in growing up in general. Her writing comes from the heart and equestrian expertise. The First Horse will be required reading for my children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

well, i have to say, this was a good book and it started out very well but the middle got kind of confusing to me and the end was just nonsence.
It did drag in some parts, but i did like it. I would have given it four stars, but becouse of the fact that the ending sort of leaves you on a hook, and kind of makes you think that there will be a sequel (although it appears the author has no intentions of that) and becouse the ending really didnt answer some of the things that happened in the story ( for example, when Wilo's crush Colin moves to a new state, Willo --main character and narator-- never explains if she plans on ever visiting him or if she ever sees him again) and also because the story never tells of anything but her home with her grandfather, training her horse Tess, seeing best friend Dove and crush Colin. it never explains about her life at school, or anything much like that. But here's a summary of what happens: Willo's dying mom made her dad promise that he would buy willo a horse. her grandfather tells her not to fall in love witht he first horse she sees, but thats exactly what she does. she falls in love with a mistreated skinny mare named Tess. But tess is a bit wild and hard to ride, so with the help of willo's beloved riding teacher, she trys to train the horse. What i do like about this story is that it is from Willo's point of view and that she has hardships throughout the summer and everything isnt all happy and perfect the whole way through. I wont tell you the ending, but i have to admit, this is a good book but i think it was rushed and things went unanswered.

Book Review,

Before Willo's mother died she promised her she could get a horse. Her grandfather told her not to get the first horse she saw. The first horse she saw was an abused ex-racehorse named Tess. The minute Willo saw her she wanted to buy her, but she had to prove to her father, who is always drunk and almost never home, she can control Tess. I liked this book. Willo worked really hard trying to reach her goals. To see if Willo reached her goals you'll have to read the book!

The appealing characters make this a book for everyone,
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Horse I See (Hardcover)
The First Horse I See is a must-read for anyone who has ever loved a horse as its portrayal of Willojean's relationship with her abused, spirited horse, Tess, is gripping and touching. But this beautiful book far transcends the genre of "horse story." Willo's relationships with her grandfather, her alcoholic father, the boy she has a crush on, are all believable and touching. Struggling with a difficult horse and a difficult father, grieving the loss of her mother, Willo is a plucky, engaging, unforgettable character who will appeal to any reader.

This book had some good aspects. It shows the bond between horse and girl, and it shows the healing that a horse can do. However, there were far too many issues of abuse, alcoholism, estrangement, and other problems that aren't resolved in the end. It left you hanging and waiting. It left the reader wondering if these issues would ever be resolved. I liked the progression and honesty which Willojean shows in her working with the horse. It isn't glossed over. There are triumphs and setbacks, but she keeps trying. At the end, one hopes that the relationship between this girl and her father will be better--but not sure. I would definitely NOT recommend this book for young readers.
