Editorial Reviews

"This is the first story I've read by Ms Myles, whose language is beautiful, descriptive without being dry, and economical -- this author gets a lot of nuance into every phrase. Just in case you wondered, everything that happens once Jez stops drawing is as good or better -- you can feel the breeze in your hair from the whoosh of him falling in love. Go read." - Cryselle at Reviews by Jessewave

"First Impressions doesn't waste any words as it covers an impressively varied emotional terrain from humorous to poignant. It also features numerous vivid details that make its British setting and culture come alive for the reader." - Val Kovalin at All Romance eBooks Café

"An entertaining and really enjoyable narrative." - Kassa at Three Dollar Bill Reviews

"Jez and Steve are characters who are so incredibly charming and likable that they should be revisited soon and often, in my humble opinion." - Lisa at Top 2 Bottom Reviews

"I simply loved this story. The vivid detail of Jez's world as he looks at everything with an artist's eye drew me in as much as the deeper truth underneath. The slow reveal of who this man is that he's been admiring every morning on the train was very interesting, well paced and fun at the same time." - Serena Yates at Queer Magazine Online

4.0 out of 5 stars Very lovely as far as short stories go June 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition

This short story was a very pleasant bright spot amongst many shorts and shortish novellas that I have read lately. I really really enjoyed how the writer gave a purpose to every word in the story, every word, every sentence meant something. I thought that I learned more about the characters than I have learned from some much longer stories. I thought that in such short page space the writer showed how the artist feels and thinks and I felt that his profession reflected exactly who Jez was as a character and thats something I find often lacking in mm stories. Of course we learned less about Steven, but it IS a short after all and he was not a POV character and it was really fun to see how first impressions change into real facts later on. Really fun story - very bright I guess, the colours assault you from the very first sentences and it is just awesome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but feels like it deserves a whole novel December 1, 2012

The author spends time on character development, which is good. But it makes me think that this was meant to be a longer work. Maybe it's the first of a series? Anyway, looking forward to reading more by Myles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice short ... October 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have previously read a few of Josephine Myles story's (my favorite being The Hot Floor) with mixed results, but this short novella ranks right up at the top. I enjoyed reading the slow evolution of Steve from a boring, nondescript office worker with funky socks in the beginning to an intriguing man Jez couldn't help but draw. And once they began talking, it was fun seeing the many ways the reality of Steve turned Jez's assumptions on their head.

A great short read worth the .99 cent price.

More About the Author

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. She blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She's beginning to suspect he enjoys it.
