* Experiments are linked to real applications. Students are likely to be interested and excited to learn more and explore. Example of experiments linked to real applications can be seen in Experiment 2, steps 6, 7, 15, and 16; Experiment 5, steps 6 to 10 and Experiment 7, steps 12 to 20.
* Self-contained background to all electronics experiments. Students will be able to follow without having taken an electronics course. Includes a self-contained introduction based on circuits only. For the instructor this provides flexibility as to when to run the lab. It can run concurrently with the first circuits analysis course.
* Review background sections are provided. This convenient text feature provides an alternative point of view; helps provide a uniform background for students of different theoretical backgrounds.
* A "touch-and-feel" approach helps to provide intuition and to make things "click". Rather than thinking of the lab as a set of boring procedures, students get the idea that what they are learning is real.
* Encourages students to explore and to ask "what if" questions. Helps students become active learners.
* Introduces students to simple design at a very early stage. Helps students see the relevance of what they are learning, and to become active learners.
* Helps students become tinkerers and to experiment on their own. Students are encouraged to become creative, and their mind is opened to new possibilities. This also benefits their subsequent professional work and/or graduate study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book into the fun of electronic lab, February 11, 2006
This review is from: A First Lab in Circuits and Electronics (Paperback)
Yannis Tsividis gives us a great beginners book into electronics. I found the instruction very concise and though it seems basic to the casual eye, is extremely helpful in learning from the beginning...where anyone should start, right? I learned about nor gates which was extremely fun and interesting, including trying to create my own schematic of a closed circuit relay. Once you can master the basics you are ready to go on to more advanced electronics, which can include building your very own radio! The diagrams and overall instruction in this book are layed out easy to understand. I have a vast background in Geology but want to further my horizons by learning other fields, and with looking into electronics I found this book to be a good starting point.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book, but very overpriced!, February 7, 2010
By
This review is from: A First Lab in Circuits and Electronics (Paperback)
I used this book for an Intro to Circuits class. I found it to be well-written although somewhat verbose and lacking in math explanation. Overall, it was helpful for the class. However, my classmates and I all felt that the book is horrendously overpriced. It is short, paperback, and black-and-white--There is no reason for it to cost what it does. The types of projects in this book are easily found online for free. Many students wound up photocopying the book and returning it, because they simply felt ripped off. I certainly don't endorse violating copyright laws, but I definitely suggest that you check out free tutorials or less expensive books before paying $50-60 for this.

Overall, good book, but avoid buying it if you can. The material is very basic and you can easily share with your lab partner or find the same tutorials online.
