Review

The First Landfall: Historic Lighthouses Of Newfoundland And Labrador is the illustrated story of ten of Newfoundland's most historic lighthouses. Built on some of the wildest and most remote headlands in the early 19th century, these historic lighthouses survive today in their original function -- navigational aids to fishermen and mariners. Each chapter highlights one of these magnificent places. Tales of heroic rescues and tragic shipwrecks are laced with descriptions of Newfoundland's coastal flora and fauna. Readers will travel back in time to touch the weathered stone and iron towers which still encircle Newfoundland's rugged coastline. -- Midwest Book Review
