5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful books
I used "First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind" for grades 1 and 2 and was thrilled that Jessie Wise came out with a book for grade 3. I wasn't, however, thrilled that I now had to purchase a second "workbook", but I did it anyway and BOY! am I glad I did. This workbook makes grammar a breeze. It is well worth the money. 2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
It was disappointing to discover that I cannot use this book without the teacher's manual. There are no instructions included on how to use the workbook. I wish I had known this before I made the purchase. Now, I have to wait until I can get the manual (living on a very tight budget does not afford me the opportunity to spend more money on an additional book), or...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful books, August 23, 2007
This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
Trying to duplicate everything on paper would be more headache than I am prepared to put up with (I homeschool more than one child and time is treasured). The text itself is very comprehensive and challenging. We are into our second week of school and I am loving this product. I highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind, Level 3, November 13, 2007
This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
This book is a good foundational way of introducing all the grammar lessons. It's not too labor intensive, yet it repeats enough to achieve mastery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Respect Excellent Program, August 26, 2007
This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
I am a homeschooler and have tried several grammar books and programs before purchasing this one because this level did not exist when I originally started searching for a language program for my children I'd previously used level 1 & 2 of this program.

I purchased Easy Grammar Daily Guided Review grade two and the author of that great program said to use it for grammar warmups. The search was on and I discovered that this book exists. Volume 4 is in the stage of being created now.

I give it 5 stars because it is an exceptional language arts program, it teaches the 8 parts of speech, alphabetization up to the third letter in a word, dictionary skills, letter writing and many other important skills. For a comprehensive list and overview see [...]. If you go to [...] they have a 50 page student book and a 89 page instructor's manual so you can try before you buy.

For variety I sometimes use worksheets from softbasics software and find that I will have more than enough materials to last two or more years. When I combine that program with this book I know that I am giving my children a well rounded langauage arts program that I can be proud of for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consice and Compact Curriculum, July 13, 2008
This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
The lessons are easy to teach & understand utilizing a spiral learning format, so the lessons are taught then practiced over and over. It challenges students to go farther than other curriculums. It uses sentence diagraming at a higher level, but easy to teach and learn. It is so easy you could basically pull out the workbook lesson and the child can teach himself.

I started using First Language Lessons a couple months ago for my 9 year old. We both love it. He will almost beg to do more. He likes everything about it. I love that it is scripted and there is nearly no prep work to do. I have other kids I home school and this keeps it simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great workbook,painless lessons, October 26, 2010

This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
I wish I had purchased this last year. I know some things seem really basic in this book, and the repetition called for in the exercises may seem extreme - especially for a really bright (high IQ) child like mine. But this works! She is so smart that she doesn't LEARN HOW TO STUDY from other programs - this teaches her how to study! Also, you are free to skip some of the repetition if needed...I still like it because it teaches my child how to memorize things that can, in fact, be boring to her. I know homeschooling is suppose to be more interesting than school text books, but our kids need to learn that some parts of learning simply require committing facts to memory, even if we don't really find it very exciting. I have used Winston Grammar, which is very bare bones grammar...not a bad program, but it leaves a lot of details with blanket explanations, and I found myself (very skilled in English grammar- but from college days) struggling to explain the finer points to my daughter. I like First Language Lessons, and I also love, love , love having the lessons completely laid out for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Homeschooling, August 19, 2009
This review is from: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind: Level 3 Student Workbook (First Language Lessons) (Paperback)
The workbook is a must have with the "teachers" or parents addition of the First Language Arts book.
We tried working from the same book and it was just too hard. Less work for me and more control for my daughter.

I love the workbook. I tried to just order the textbook but it was too time consuming creating my own pages for my son. He loves this workbook because he can read along as we go. I totally recommend this book if you are buying level 3.

This curriculum has been a lifesaver for me. It gives young children an excellent foundation for grammar. I just wish the curriculum went past the 4th grade. After 4th grade, we transition to 5th grade Rod and Staff with no problems at all. This is a fun grammar curriculum for younger children.
