Editorial Reviews

"A single bee, with all its energy, collects but a tiny drop of honey at each trip to the field, in the best season, yet the colony to which it belongs may harvest hundreds of pounds of surplus for its owner, in a single year." Charles Dadant, father of the author of First Lessons in Beekeeping, C.P. Dadant was widely known as a preeminent force in beekeeping throughout Europe. "In France, "Dadant" and "Dadant hive" are household words among beekeepers." When C.P. Dadant published First Lessons in Beekeeping in 1917, he was the Editor of the American Bee Journal. Many of the articles published by the journal were practical guides which blend well with this work; in it Dadant combines numerous photos with hundreds of illustrations to tell the story of the bee, the hive and the honey produced inside as well as explaining the methodology behind creating and tending the hive professionally. With extensive content on varieties of bees, establishing your apiary, production and even marketing of the honey, First Lessons in Beekeeping blends fact, observation and know-how gleaned from nearly one hundred years of experience into an easy to understand volume. The tenth edition was published by American Bee Journal in 1934.

Not too sexy, but has all the right stuff. This book is a timeless guide to modern-day beekeeping. The pictures are a little dated, and black-white, but the information is sound and professionally written. This book left me feeling well educated and confident. And at this price, it's a deal!

Very appropriate title since this book is packed with useful information for beginning beekeepers. It was definitely worth the money I paid Amazon for this book. The black and white pictures are somewhat outdated but the information provided in this book is timeless. It is divided so that information is easily found and has been a source of reference for us on several occasions.

From a beginners standpoint this is an excellent book. This book is packed full of information and an excellent reference. This title gives you the principles you have to know to start seriously thinking about beekeeping.

Besides this book I'll recomend you this one:
The Complete Book Of Beekeeping

We use the newer editions of "First Lessons in Beekeeping" each year in our annual Bee School. I enjoy reading the older editions. This is an excellent book.

Same book from the 20s with a new cover. Not really what I had hoped for. Most of the language is highly dated and it doesn't address what is happening today.

Great beginning book for those new to the hobby and a grand refresher for those a little more experienced. Fine work.

I found "First Lesson in Beekeeping" to be detailed and a timeless introductory book on beekeeping for beginners. Although the language is a bit dated (1911), the information is still valid and worth reading. I acquire my first two hives next month, and this book has been helpful in preparing me for this new phase in my life.

Written in old English and so is harder to understand. Also, some of the conventions are dated and it doesn't have any recent information. It gives a reasonably good overall concept of beekeeping, but there are more modern books that would do better. Beekeeping for Dummies would be one.
