On the harsh militant world of Sindorus, where even colours are considered sinful, three people living very separate lives are about to have those lives change forever. As deceptions are torn away, and ancient secrets brought to light, they each must struggle to find the missing pieces to the puzzle... answers that will unlock their true destiny.
Idrith, bitter and trapped in a life he never chose, is the first to discover his own fear-filled mystery. Obsessed with finding the truth behind the lies he turns to the one person he has always tried to avoid - the mysterious pilgrim, Harmion.
Aztar's military promotion comes with an unexpected burden. A serious problem threatens the security of the entire Northerner regime and it seems that their only hope may lie in the hands of someone he was raised to think of as his enemy and inferior. Each day they struggle together to find a solution, but at night Aztar struggles alone as the secret he's kept hidden since childhood returns to torment him.
In a world where most women have no control over their lives Daen was allowed to grow up unrestricted and far better educated than normal. Now her father's health is failing and the running of their family estate lies in her hands... and with it the security of everyone she loves. Knowing that desperate situations call for courageous action, Daen is about to take a step that will change all their lives forever.

First Light is a winner!, June 8, 2009
This review is from: First Light (Paperback)
Michelle Frost is an exciting new novelist who creates a world reminiscent of LeGuin's Earthsea in many ways. A fluid and skilled writer, Frost expertly draws us into the inter-weaving of the lives of seven very diverse characters. She leads them and us through solving an ancient puzzle that would change their lives and their world.
"Follow the colours of your soul."
I look forward to further adventures with the inhabitants of Sindorus and being delighted by Ms. Frost's unique and exhilarating story-telling.

Delightful New Author, June 7, 2009
This review is from: First Light (Paperback)
Michelle Frost has created a fascinating new society - one in which the use of color is taboo. Look around you where ever you are at this moment and appreciate how colorful your world is. Can you imagine living in a society where you could not wear a color stronger than gray or beige? Where you could not hang a color picture on your walls? Although the colors of nature still abound it is considered sinful to admire even the colors of the sunset! Michelle expertly weaves together the very separate lives of her 4 main characters in their search for meaning in their own lives and their struggles to express the colors of their passions and their souls. And in so doing creates a tapestry of light and color that will inspire and intrigue you.
This is a very satisfying read - though much too short IMO :) The loose ends are tied up and the questions are answered .... except one - when is this author coming out with the next installment? While Michelle is an experienced writer in other formats this is her first published novel .... I can not wait to read her next one!
