5.0 out of 5 stars Think that rock is dead? Wrong! Thank God for Metroscene!, March 15, 2001
This review is from: First Light at Last Orders (Audio CD)
Let me start by telling you what bands I like listening to, so you can have some perspective on my musical taste. First of all, Radiohead are the undisputed Gods of music (notice how I left out "in my opinion"). Then there's Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplen, Bjork, Live (old Live), U2, Tool, old Metallica, Alice in Chains, Dead Can Dance, and many more of course.

Now, back to Metroscene. I had read a couple of reviews that compared Metroscene to Brit Rock bands, like Oasis and Pulp, and that didn't get me very excited about 'em at first. I think Oasis and Pulp suck, so a band that may sound like them was probably gonna suck as well. It took me a couple of listens to understand what the hell these guys were doing with their instruments. I think it was after the third listen that I said to myself "Oh my God! These guys absolutely rock!" It's so unfair to compare them to Oasis. I think they're way more creative. Their wide range of style makes me think of Radiohead more than anything else. I am now completely obsessed with this band. I listened to this album EVERY SINGLE DAY, multiple times a day, for like a month. I haven't been this excited about a new band since Live's Mental Jewelry first came out (for those who love MJ, I think you'll be even more impressed with FLALO). Modern Decline is one of the most unique songs I've ever heard. I can't think of anything to compare it to, not even any of the other songs on this album. It's an excellent piece, but its haunting sound may throw off some first time listeners (don't worry, the rest of the album is very upbeat). The 2 instrumental pieces on the album are absolutely amazing and add to the album's unique style. I probably don't have enough room here to review all the other songs. Let me summarize by saying that I DO NOT skip a single song when I listen to this CD. William Youth and Curtains are awesome. Daydream Superstar is even better. Ashes is yet even better. Morphia Sunset tops all four. And when you think that's as good as it gets, there's Virgina Dare. And on top of all that are my personal favorites: the instrumental Countdown and Theme from M. I feel very bad leaving out any of the songs on this CD. They're all oh so good! Stop reading this and buy the album NOW!
