Dey and Katt Sizzle,
By
This review is from: First Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Although the plot of this "First Love" story is fairly routine and forseeable (boy meets girl; boy gets girl; boy loses girl), the stars make it more than worthwhile.
I'm not sure how much of the pivotal scene is shot using a body-double for Susan Dey (not much, I think), but it's actually irrelevant. When Ms. Dey divests herself of her dress for the first time for Katt, it's a revelation!! (No pun intended). Her pure eroticism is utterly incredible for those only familiar with her work in Partridge Family or LA Law. The film runs towards it's predictable denouement, but the whole package is well shot, well acted and incredibly well directed. If you can find it, buy it! It's worth your time.

Bittersweet, Sad Love Story,
By
This review is from: First Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Talk about a movie that tests your emotions. It was sad and it had a lot of truth to it as well. Susan Dey, William Katt, Swoozie Kurtz and Beverly D'angelo have never been better than they are in this movie.
At times it may be a little bit racy to watch with the kids (16 and under), but it teaches the older children about first love and the heartaches that do come with it. I liked this movie and at times it almost brought a tear to my eye. Watch it for some fine acting and a look into the many pains of first love.

The true Love story,

When I first saw the film I loved it.William Katt was wonderfully naive and sweet while attempting to win the heart of a brat. The music was so sweet as well. I wish I could find that one song that was featured. The price of this film is ludicrous. Why doesnt the company that released this film able to convert it to dvd and sell it for a decent price?

Wonderfully romantic coming-of-age picture,
By
This review is from: First Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember watching this movie in my early teens (edited TV version), and being taken by the no-nonsense, decent storyline and a great performance by William Katt. The story was probably more original when it first came out, but all the choices we make, how luck drastically changes things we cannot control, being crazy in love only to lose your beloved one for one reason or another struck a nice cord. The ending is one of the best endings in my memory for a romantic movie. Without giving much away, I remember thinking that if I was in the position of Katt's character, I would have made the same choice. A decent nostalgic film from late 70's about the innocence and vulnerability of young lovers learning about life, with beautiful photography involving college campus scenes in the fall. Highly recommended.

sad movie but...it is a hidden treasure,
By
This review is from: First Love [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember seeing this movie in the 70's, now that I stumbled upon this movie through amazon, it brought back all the sad memories from the movie as well as my own during that time period, young, carefree, being in love, and had to let the first love of my life go.
I wish there are DVDs for me to buy. I may buy it and burn it to DVD, it worths the effort. Too bad this movie faded into oblivion, I must give this 5 stars while the other movies of the same gene, Endless Love and Love Story that have better music scores will hold a 2 stars in comparison.

I Guess I'm a Lone Voice in the Wilderness Here.,

First off, be prepared for a MAJOR SPOILER here:Ugh, what a miserable piece of trash! This has to be one of the worst 70s liberated thinking "love" stories I have ever seen since the horrible film adaptation of Judy Blume's Forever starring Stephanie Zimbalist and Dean Butler from Little House on the Prairie. This one has William Katt, the bumbling underwear donning idiot from Greatest American Hero, and Susan Dey, Laurie from the Partridge Family, playing college sweethearts (more like sweet hard-ons) with zero chemistry. All they do is bop whenever and wherever they can like a pair of exuberant rabbits. The little talk about intimate gratification was so very unoriginal, because most everyone talks about that stuff in private, and I started laughing. She draws the line when he wants to do it in a playhouse her suicidal father had built for her, and the fact that he wants to do it there creeps me out too! Wisely, she dumps him after that little scene to unwisely hook back up with an older unmarried man. Then she bounces right back to him like an out-of-control tennis ball and he decides he doesn't love her after all. You call this a great, heartbreaking love story? I guess some of these actors just wanted to break out of their typecast cutey pie roles, but it's painfully obvious they were trying too hard. Also, Beverly D'Angelo's character was such an idiotic nympho, I was embarrassed for her. She must have really needed a paycheck badly to be in this thing. A boring waste of 90 minutes, I'd rather watch ants walk across a picnic spread.

This has always been a favorite of mine, so sad that it is not available on dvd. The music really makes it lovely, such a wonderful sad story for those of us who love a good cry. I love Cat Stevens' "Child For A Day", and i think that Susan Dey and William Katt were the perfect pair of players. DVD PLEASE!
