Format:MP3 Music
Bob Shimizu is a guitar player of the first rank! On this album of eleven songs, all composed by Shimizu, he demonstrates the flexibility of the guitar as the primary instrument. His technique is flawless - but it also has a lot of soul and nowhere is that more evident than in the arrangements he has created with a little help from Clarke Rigsby and Todd Chuba (who also happen to be the producers of this long awaited release). Shimizu's compositions and choice of instrumental backup give evidence of his broad range of exposure to the music of the world. He can play straight out jazz, but he can also step into the Latin rhythms as in Above the Clouds, and it all works very well indeed.

The musicians who provide not only support for Shimizu's solo passages but also step in the spotlight now and then to display their own gifts are the following: David Garfield, keyboards, Bill Moio, backing guitars, Todd Chuba, drums, Mario Mendivil, electric bass, Mike King, acoustic bass, Joey DeFrancesco, organ, Lenny Castro, percussion, Eric Marienthal, soprano and alto sax, Dominick Farinacci, flugelhorn, Matt Williams, vibes, and Lamar Gaines, synths.

Another aspect of this gifted musician is subtly present on reading through the fine enclosure: Bob Shimizu designed and did the layout for the brochure which just happens to include little explanations and tributes under the title of each of his composition listings. Bob Shimizu is a class act and this recording rises to that level, too. Grady Harp, September 11
