Grade 4-6-A bright, oversized book full of colorful photographs inviting young artists to create wonderful projects. Using various paint techniques, step-by-step instructions give readers ideas for decorating gift bags, making and using stencils, painting T-shirts, designing a kite, and more. The words "My First" in the title are a bit deceptive, as some of the activities are quite complicated and designed for upper elementary audiences. Otherwise, this is an enjoyable title for reading or browsing.

Each project appears on a double-page spread featuring clear photographs of the tools, supplies, and finished products as well as smaller photos illustrating the instructions. If middle-grade students can get beyond the book's babyish title, the ideas and directions will suit them just fine.
