Gr 7 Up-This third and final installment of a trilogy traces the emergence of the U.S. as a nation while focusing on George Washington's role in this process. Rosenburg opens the book with Washington's resignation as commander in chief of the Continental Army and goes on to outline significant events such as the Constitutional Convention, the Whiskey Rebellion, and debates concerning controversial issues like slavery and taxation. The author's straightforward, factual narrative contains a painstaking amount of detail sprinkled with dialogue and primary-source material. Unfortunately, the detail becomes tedious at times and bogs down the story. Approximately 100 pages are devoted to the Constitutional Convention. Readers may be disappointed by the lack of personal information about Washington and the abundance of political description. However, Rosenburg does successfully convey a sense of urgency on Washington's part as he is faced with the unique and precarious situation of being the nation's first president. Ultimately, this historical account delivers a fairly engaging tale of the birth of our nation with an emphasis on its first leader. Archival reproductions, a chronology, and a bibliography round out this "novel based on fact."-Laura Glaser, Euless Junior High School, TX
