I think this is a really solid book for NBME shelf preparation. It is very to the point and doesn't include a bunch of useless fluff. If you are really interested in psych and want more than a basic outline of each condition, then this book is not for you. It is in no way a reference text and is really just the important stuff for the test. If, like me you just want to do well on the shelf, this book is great.

This was the first First Aid product I've purchased since buying First Aid for USMLE Step 1, and I think I made a mistake by not buying the First Aids for the last four clerkships I've done. This book was ~200 pages of high-yield information, and it covered almost everything on the shelf exam in adequate detail.

The book is organized into chapters based on similar types of psychiatric disorders. Within those chapters, the sections of specific diagnoses are listed with their DSM-IV criteria, common presentations, treatment, etc. The text provides a complete picture of all the important conditions with a perfect amount of detail. There is also a separate chapter on pharmacology, which lists all the major drugs with their mechanism of action, side effects, and indications.

After taking the shelf, I realized that almost everything on the test was in this book. Case Files was similar in overall quality, but First Aid is much easier to get through in a short clerkship.

If I had to nitpick, I would say this book could have included more on general medical conditions that can masquerade as psychiatric illnesses. I would recommend flipping through the endocrine chapter in another review book prior to taking the exam.

Pretty much everything you need for the psychiatry clerkship. It does a great job of including all DSM criteria and other high yield facts and statistics. And it has treatment sections at the end which are really helpful.

I'm a psychiatry resident currently and I remember finding this book to be incredibly helpful as a medical student. Just the right amount of information in an easy to read and remember way. It sets up a nice framework and I also remember it being helpful for me to take notes in the book throughout the clerkship. This was my main resource and I had the highest score for the clerkship exam.

This rating is appropriate for this book because the book is clear and concise. There were many helpful mnemonics in it. There were several clinical cases that help you apply the knowledge in NBME style. You should try to finish the book 2-weeks into your rotation and then refer back when you forget something while doing questions of course. The book was helpful in every way necessary. For the price and its concise delivery of psych knowledge, I 'd say buy it!!!

So far this book has been very useful, especially in establishing the basic foundation. I haven't taken the shelf yet, so I can't comment if using just this book as my basis and supplementing with usmle qbank and certain chapters of the lange book are sufficient for honors. But if you're like me and use this is a base and like to add in info from other sources, I would definitely recommend this.

Absolute money for the psych shelf exam. This, along with the Lange Q&A question book for psychiatry were all I needed. Note- pay no attention to the questions that deal with "30% of ppl with schizophrenia also had nocturnal enuresis as kids". There are NO such questions on the shelf, and I wasted A LOT of time memorizing them out of the Lange Q&A beforehand.

This is a good quick-read study book that gives a good basic overview of topics for the psychiatry shelf. There were a few typos here and there in this edition (grammar/spelling rather than factual) and the authors used the "-->" arrow liberally whenever "leads to" was meant, both of which made for awkward reading at times.
