Editorial Reviews

CD reissue of two long out-of-print 2005 EPs from the Savannah-based Metal outfit, now combined together on one disc. Both have been remixed and remastered and compiled with reworked art and a foil stamped, custom digipak package .This collection features everything from chunky math Metal to melodic and crusty Hardcore/Punk to Swedish Thrash to dual leads and classic Rock guitar stylings, all flowing effortlessly. On the First EP, Baroness combined different styles into something all their own and took heavy music to a new level. Produced by Phillip Cope of Kylesa. The Second EP saw Baroness return to the studio with producer Cope to record their sophomore EP. Second shows another side of Baroness with less straightforward Rock and more tech-heavy instrumentals, tempo changes and Psychedelic interludes while at the same time capturing the energy and intensity of their live show. 2008.

My first experience with Baroness was about two years ago. My mother in law handed me a cheap, give-away AM/FM radio with ear-buds about the size of a matchbook and asked me to figure out how to use it. The only station I could seem to get on the thing was a local college station. As fortune would have it, I tuned in just as the DJ was starting to play The Red Album in it's entirety, from beginning to end. I was entranced-- and surprised as I'm not at all a fan of "doom" or "extreme" metal. But this was something different, something that can only be described as genius. I called the DJ and asked for the name of the band (he didn't say on the show), and, well, the rest is history. I was hooked.
People compare these guys with Mastadon, but their music never attracted me like this. What Baroness does is very special. After buying The Red Album, I started exploring backward. Sampling streams of the first three EPs, I had to find them, which was no easy matter. This limited re-issue was a dream come true.
This music is heavy, yeah, but the commitment to and passion for what these musicians do does something positive for the soul. I find the music and lyrics uplifting, despite the growling and screaming. The music is just that good. Complex, with lots of time changes and odd signatures and just the right amount of psychedelia make this metal great for either getting psyched or trancing out. The lyrics are extremely literate and inteligent. You could put them down on paper and hand them to a lit teacher, and they would try to figure out which classic poet wrote them. No stupid "kill your parents" nonsense here. This is not just metal-- it's fine art, that simple, whether the main stream will ever recognize that or not.
My favorites are "Tower Falls", "Rise", "Red Sky" and "Son of Sun"-- but, really, it's all good. Anyway, I am very happy this is in my collection, along with the rest of Baroness' catalogue.

The only copy of this album that is availble is selling for almost $400.00 bucks right now? I paid $40 and thought that it had better be good...
Well, I wasn't dissapointed as the instrumental work is all that I loved about the Red and Blue albums. What I'm not as keen on is the different vocal stylings but what the hell it sounds good. Since I got hooked on Baroness as a band I can't seem to get enough so if you feel the same and can shell out the insane amount of dough for the album it rocks and the double sided cover art is fantastic.
If you by some chance stumble on this review without having first purchased the Blue and Red albums/records buy them first and save some cash as they are some of the best music that I've had the privilege of hearing.

I have gotten really into Baroness in the last year, but this record is not available on CD, so I picked it up on vinyl. The record did not disappoint, and I am really happy I got it. It is a little heavier than their newer stuff, but still very good.

If you love grungy melodic and inventive metal, you'll love this compilation. Still sounds fresh after years of listening. Here's hoping they will go back to their metal roots with their next album...

I love both these records and expected it to be a little more beefy. however, the actual sound quality seemed slightly muddied and didnt quite kick like i hoped. I still love the albums.
