Editorial Reviews

2012 release. This is De La Soul's Plug 1 & Plug 2 present First Serve; a dynamic hip-hop group, an album, a concept, the soundtrack to a movie that has yet to be made & a fable for our times. First Serve is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Witter (aka plug 2 / Dave of De La Soul) and Jacob 'Pop Life' Barrow (aka Plug 1 / Pos of De La Soul), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, "different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do." Their name comes from their motto "first come, first serve, get what you deserve."Pos & Dave were inspired by the acclaimed French production team, Chokolate & Khalid, by an approach to do something completely different with this album concept...a movie on wax of sorts. To do this Chokolate & Khalid created the alter ego 2&4, while the legendary De La Soul boys created Deen & Jacob for their part in this alternate reality. The four of them created their hip-hop fable together in Paris, tying songs to true stories where they worked best.

Customer Reviews

The best album of 2012, in my eyes.

It's a good album, not on par with classic De La Soul- I miss all 3 guys and the good ol days.

Dave is hilarious, it has been awhile since I enjoyed the skits on an album so much.

Online reviews are interesting, gone are the days of word of mouth, street buzz and radio play. Hip Hop music has taken such a drastic turn and has become commercialized and synthetic, that majority of the hip hop music you hear nowadays is mundane. This De La Soul album is a breath of fresh air, and after 20 years in the game they are still plugging away as plug one and plug two. De La Soul is timeless and their production and lyrical skills remain true to the De La Soul spirit. This album is not about hearing plug three, because Mase is on the album, he is under a different moniker, which is what De La Soul is all about. SO if you are a true De La fan, reading any of these reviews should not influence you to buy this album. If you have always appreciated their innovative style and enjoyed their music over the years then this is a must buy. There are some artists that you buy without even listening to the album first and De La Soul is one of those groups. They are like old friends that you haven't seen in awhile and its good to catch up. So if you are tired of doing the "stanky leg" or trying to teach someone how to "dougie", I would suggest turning your attention to real hip hop. Those groups don't even exist anymore and they are young enough to be the children of De la Soul. If you get my drift. Longevity people, that is the true essence of hip hop. Peace

Love De La. The chemistry is a little different, but certainly didn't disappoint. Without Plug 3, there is a void that is compensated for by an interesting "story line" (like Prince Paul - Prince among thieves". I'd would buy another 2/3 De La album, however, I would prefer if it were all of'em.

Great concept album by the great De La Soul. Though I am confused because I thought it was a solo album but that is De La for ya... always paving their own way. Dave is hilarious, it has been awhile since I enjoyed the skits on an album so much. Actually the last great skit album (to me) was Prince Paul's "Prince Among Thieves," which the skits on the two albums seem eerily similar. One thing I hate about MP3's are the absence of production and writing credits. I already know who wrote but I wonder who produced the tracks? Bravo De La Soul, very refreshing

It's a good album, not on par with classic De La Soul- I miss all 3 guys and the good ol days. I realize times change but 3 Feet High and Rising and Buhloone Mind State are classics.

Too much talking at the beginnings and ends of songs. "Pop Life" is the best song on the album. Where's Plug 3?

It's not often that a hip-hop album can be charming and touching while not being corny. "First Serve" accomplishes it with a simple narrative of the rise, breakup and reunion of a hip-hop outfit, played by De La Soul's Pos and Dave. No single song is a barnburner -- it's even hard to imagine a single coming from it -- but that's not really the point. The story is not exactly sophisticated or suspenseful, but they're not trying to be Dickens. Instead, the album portrays a great friendship among two engaging personalities through a simple story arc that is perfectly underlined by vibrant, tuneful production. By the end of the album I get chills every time. Granted, that might be partially because I'm a lifelong De La fan -- but apart from that, I think this album does something quite rare and special.
